Uhh... it was part of the story. Some gathering he was at ran out of wine, so he turned magically changed water. I, too, like looking for things to pick at in the Bible, but this isnt really one of them (except the fact that he supposedly turned water into wine x_x). In those days, the water wasnt really that clean and consequently wasnt really that safe to drink. Hence people drinking wine all the time..

The "point" would be his ability to change chemical properties, I guess..

John 2: 1-11

Jesus Changes Water to Wine

1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
4"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."
5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[1]
7Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.
8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."
9They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."
11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

Jesus and his disciples were at a wedding, and the bride and groom ran out of wine for their wedding guests. He took the water and turned it into wine so that the celebration of the bride and groom could continue. This wine was better than the wine that they ran out. It's not like he did this on a daily basis or for just anyone; this was a wedding reception.

I love how he treats his mother with such great respect. Calling his mother who birthed him "woman" goes along so nicely with the Ten Commandments. :\ So honoring.

Oh, so she isnt his mother, just the person who gave birth to him! Man, what was I thinking? It is so obvious now! Because we all know that giving birth to a child doesnt make one the mother, just some random woman.

Now this is truly degenerating. Oh well, here goes. Now, Jesus was not the equivalent of God. If he was, people would have called him God. Still with me people? Jesus didn't have the power God did. The power of a divine force as large as a higher deity couldn't be contained in the shell of a mortal. Jesus was simply an extension of God.

What exactly are you getting at here? Obviously he was not "God the Father", or humans wouldn't have been able to even look at him. But they are one and the same.. This is old news.. Im confused. :(

He changed the water into wine because it was a wedding people. Wine was what people drank back in the day, even little kids drank a watered down version, they harvested grapes as one of their main foods.

He calls Mary "woman" because she isn't his mother. Jesus was put into the womb of Mary by God. God created him, not Mary. He showed great respect for her. He made sure she had all she needed before he left back for Heaven, he told his apostles to take care of her in his absence, he prayed for her, asking God to help her out when she needed Him.
