Shadowmaster in 1.10? (and problem creating a merc.)

I've figured out that I can create the character I want in SM, then "update" him by playing him in a 1.10 game. What I can't seem to figure out is how to create a merc. I've hired one, and given him the stats I want, but I can't figure out how to make him show up in game. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there a different program I should be using?
