Scoreboard Settings?

I need to know two things about the scoreboard.

I know how to create it, add and remove players from it when they enter or leave the game. The question is how do you make them apply the user's name to the board. I tried that trigger that allows you to do that but all the fields showed up blank, does it affect it testing in single player mode?

Second, how do you add or subtract points from the scoreboard. In a sense set a variable to use. I wanted to use gold as my variable.

with the user name its easy... just add a player and rename it or something ( i am to lazy to look at it now....)

make a trigger with periotic (or something like that) event... like every second.
action = set variable .. [UR var.] = current gold of player (X)
