You're trying to find the answer based on logic. Try thinking more abstract. There is another answer to this riddle.

It says only one letter, and envelope can have more than one letter.

Heh, you used logical reasoning, then abstract in your last sentence. A dark mood, or a dark omen could kill laughter. That would be an abstract reply to your logical reasoning.

Darkness cannot have any shape. You can't reach out and touch it, however I understand what you mean by being able to see and feel darkness. The logical reply to your abstract statement would be that darkness is not three dimentional. It has no height, or width, hence you can't see or touch it in that sense. If you were to try to describe what darkness looks like, my first thought would be "black". From there I'd have a hard time describing what it looks like...

Lastly, for this riddle at least, darkness wasn't meant to be a mood. Not many people reply to "How are you feeling?" with "Darkness".
