You can get ISO files for linux, that are free.

Check out http://linuxiso.org/

On 56k, it would take you days...but if you can get someone with Highspeed to download them for you, I would Reccomend Fedora Core 2.

If you didn't live accross the states I would send you it. The ones with a GUI are like 5 disks @ 600mbs. There are a few with one disk @ 600mb, but those are all command line.

You can also buy linux cd's off from ebay, for very cheap. Because I have dial up too, I bought mine over ebay, for like 5 bucks.

Get someone to download SUSE 9.1 from Roach's link and burn it for you, shouldn't be to hard, hell, you can even buy such services here in Germany, so you probably can in America as well.

Mandrake sucks...the new version has so many problems.

-edit

Well, for me anyway. It wouldn't even detect my modem...and every linux OS I've used has.

Allot of people like it though..

Yeah, it's good for beginners, just didn't like my modem, for some reason. I installed 10...and didn't like it. Also, when I partitioned my drive with it's tools, I set it to install over all previous linux partitions...and it totally erased my windows drive. I think I was using a test version of it though...not the final release...

XandrOS also is great for beginners. Has to be the easiest distro ever.. It's debian based, so it doesn't use RPMs. It's very simple, and you barely have to use the command line at all.
