Here's a whole mix of everything I've found from Blizzard and other people, in case your having trouble downloading the patch, or have slow connection speed in-game.
For the patch:
1. Closing Background Applications
Selective Startup:
For Windows XP/ME users:
Click Start and select Run, then type "msconfig" and click OK.
In the General tab:
For Windows 98 users:
Click Start and select Run, then type "msconfig" and click OK.
In the General tab:
Slow Connection:
Firewall:
If you have a firewall, be sure that it is set up to allow for incoming connections on Ports 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999 for the TCP (also called TCP/IP) protocol.
Router:
Be sure that the router configuration has Ports 3724, 6112, and 6881 through 6999 forwarded to your computer, and only your computer.
(for help with configuring your router to forward to an I.P., refer to my post here)
If none of that works, or you are still having slow download speeds, try downloading from either of these sites.

Slow in-game speeds:
1. Try closing all background applications, through the steps above, and see if it is a CPU problem. If not, try #2.
2. Try opening/forwarding ports:
3724
8086-8087
9081-9100
