I have Windows XP Home edition... just got it with my new laptop.

Everytime I try playing Warcraft 3, i get about 10 seconds into the game and my computer automatically reboots. XP has a lot of gaming conflicts, including playing Quake 3 from what I hear.

A lot of new computers are pumping out Windows XP Home, so I'm assuming that's what the problem is.

I even went to the extent of installing Windows 2k on this computer, and Warcraft3 played fine. Why did I switch back to XP? Time for a change I guess. Maybe if I really miss Warcraft 3 that badly (considering I did buy the Collector's Edition Box Set), I'll put 2000 back on though.

I agree with Deathmate, Warcraft III is VERY popular. I dont think XP home should be a problem... Its probibly ur system. Alot of laptops only have 4 mb graphics cards, which wont play WC3(Ok, I did rig mine to play it with a Celeron processor and a 4 mb graphics card, but it was slow as hell, almost unplayable. Took it literally 15 to load the game the first time, and 3 min every time after that). Make sure up laptop is capable of playing it.

Lol, well it is a HP Home Edition XP version. I have a copy of Windows 2000, so I'm thinking of downgrading to that. It has some additional security features I like as well.

As for my system, I have a 16MB video card, Pentium 4 1.8 gHz, with 2 256MB DIMMS (512MB total which is upgradeable to 1024MB), and a 40GB IDE hard drive.

Thanks for the help guys, I guess when I decide to get off my lazy ass and install Win2k, I'll quit bitching and get my ass kicked by you guys. Just wish I had another functioning computer to back all my shit on to, but I suppose that's what web servers are good for from time to time. :)

i know from experience, if you have a cd burner, even if the disk is legit, war III will have problems, but a complete reboot?
i have xp and it's never done that, it did crash the computer that had a burner/ME combo though, took me a week to get it back to peak efficiency

Partition your HD in like half and copy the stuff you want to save, kill the other partition your XP home is on and reinstall 2000 on that partition and copy your files back over.

I use XP professional on my machine and haven't had a problem with XP yet, your problem may be different I have run into the "Reboot" problem.

What happens is that there is a heat buildup in the machine due to graphic demands. The CPU is working hard as well as the videocard, both creating heat. The Heat then will reboot your computer, it's a saftey thing with your computer, your computer will reboot itself before it does damage to itself, in hopes that whatever it is doing at the time will be ended by the reboot. To avoid the heat buildup, all I do is take the side off of my case enabling better air flow, letting cooler air in and letting the warm air out.

I dissagree; I just got a new Toshiba Sattilite 1400 with 27 GB harddrive, 2.5 GHz, Two Hundred some-odd Ram. It has a CD burner as well as a DVD player - My comp runs fine. One thing, however, I did have a few problems with starting WCIII, but that had to do with the resolution. If you guys are having problems like WCIII runs fine for 10 mins and reboots your comp - check out what messages you get.
Since I don't know exactly what the problem is I can tell you that XP can open programs as if it was 2k - but that really shouldn't have anything to do with the problem because WCIII was made to run on all windows - but try it out and post what happens.
Chances are that your problem is on Blizzard.com's technical FAQ section, you might want to take a peek at that - they usually help out a lot.

Whoops, I hadn't read Silynt Rage's post before I posted a reply, It sounds like he knows exactly what he's talking about. You may disreguard my last post if Silynt fixed your problems.

it's not a set in stone reason why it doesn't work, I'm just saying, I've found that XP is demanding on the CPU and WC3 is demanding on the videocard, just letting some airflow through your comp case helps a bundle.

WarCraft 3 US EAST is kinda garbagy...if you go looking for a clan, at there is a starcraft. it DOES get annoying! I disagree with some of you. It is not that popular. Poeple still didn't buy warcraft 3 (Those idiotik fools) and think that starcraft, or brood war is still better. Btu in about a year, I will bet you, WarCraft 3 will get so popular, Starcraft will be no more! But I don't think that there is a problem with XP. I think it is jsut that those poor people could somehow afford starcraft original, are probably still saving up for brood war! It could take them a couple years to find out warcarft 3 is the way to go! But still, I cannot beleive after more than 2 months, warcraft 3 is not as popular as I thought it would be. (I still think that it is so weird, are they stupid or something? Can't they jsut buy WarCraft 3? Or are they just gonna sit on their *ss all day and play a 100 year old StarCraft game! I think so! SO ALL YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE WITHOUT WARCAFT 3, BUY IT, TRY IT, AND YOU WILL GET ADDICTED TO IT!
P.S. AND WTF IS WITH STARCRAFT:GHOST ONLY BEING FOR CONSOLE!!!!!!!!! DUMB BLIZZARD!

XP Pro runs WC3 fine. It must be your hardware. If you've overclocked your video card, try resetting it. My WC3 crashes when I overclock it far too much.

Starcraft: Ghost for console: Sounds like a plan! I'd actually prefer that to happen. The only thing that would be the down point for me is no shortcut keys. Consols are generally faster than computers in every concept - with few acceptions...okay, maybe a little more than a few - no more than that.

If you have a problem with it being on console buy one, but a keyboard and mouse for 'em. Rock on! Woo.

As for WCIII not being as popular: I'm holding all my opinions on this subject untill I see what happens when James Bond comes out - there's a WCIII ad in the previews; as there was an EverQuest ad on A Knight's Tale.

When I first got WC3 and installed I was so happy. Then I opened the .exe file and got even happier. All of a sudden a pop-up dialouge window appeared telling me that I need DX8.1. I ran dxconfig and saw that I had DX8.1. I rebooted the computer and it still didn't work. Finally, I got smart and went to Microsoft.com and updated all of the files. I downloaded DX again and reinstalled it and that worked! Don't know why it didn't recognize it. What made me even madder was that I couldn't install it off of the WC3 disk.
