I was wondering how you make custom portraits in Starcraft. I don't want to edit the existing ones, I want to create entirely new ones, that I can insert easily into a UMS map. So can anyone tell me how to do this? In the easiest way if possible. I can forgo quality over learning the skill for now. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

nope. you cannot create custom portraits, unlike in warcraft III where you can do everything. it actually mentions in the starcraft campaign editor players guide that this is impossible to do. (I don't know why I remember what that book says when I learned nothing from it..)

Damnit. That would be so cool. So I assume you cannot do anything else for UMS maps that isn't normal, like having custom buildings or w/e. I thought that the information would get put into the map then whenever someone played it the information would enable the unit to appear. BOO HOO YOU ALL HAVE SPOILED MY MAP MAKING CAREER.

LOL well you assume correct execpt about the part about the information being into the map. Basicly there is no need to input all the character info into each map seperatly. The file size would skyrocket and battle net would be basicly impractical. Starcraft just like any other program stores there basic files in a common place (StarDat.mpq i think) and when it uses them it basicly links to that or draws the information from it.

To change the things you speak of you would have to edit the Mpq essentually editing the program itself. And then you would have to exchange your Mpq with the other players playing the mod. (i don't know if this is exactly how this happens since i never do any Modding)

I hope this was helpfull.

Actually, you sorta could. It would barely work and I don't know how you would do that, but anyways. Do a transmission showing a different unit portrait but it will always be there until you tell it to stop.
