Photoshop Error

I have a slight problem. I'm trying to use the rectangular marquee tool to cut a piece out of a layer that's on top of the background (It's just a square). Everytime I try to use the marquee tool anywhere on the signature, it says:

Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible.

that is because you dont have anything on that layer to cut out...I think. are you on the right layer? make sure you have the right layer selected of what you want to cut out.

The selection is drawn around opaque pixels and not drawn around >50% transparent pixels. Whatever you're selecting is being selected fine, whether you know you have those pixels there or not. It's a normal selection, you just can't see the border.
