What software is used to create PDFs?

This seems rather obvious to me, but wouldn't you just use Adobe Acrobat? As far as I know, it's the only program that can read PDF files, so I'm going to assume it's the only program that can create them as well.

Or am I totally wrong?

You can actually write PHP to write to PDF using libraries that are predefined in PHP itself. I have no idea though.

You can also 'print' to PDF by printing to a file and using a PDF as output, I believe.

But as for commercial..... Photoshop can save in PDF, remember.

And yes, Acrobat Reader can read pdfs, but is there a professional version or something that writes them?

One of the things PDFs were meant to do were to stop piracy and plaigerism (sp) so they didn't add an editing capability - you had to get Photoshop to do that and you can't edit it.

So you have to buy Photoshop (or Imageready/Illustrator) to get it, a good tradeoff considering the licensing costs.

Or, you could go for the 'underworld' version of *cough* piracy.

What I have to say: Adobe Acrobat 6 does not create PDFs. It wasn't intended to. Why do you think Adobe Acrobat 5 was given away for free download?

That's what professionals use to make PDFs.. very quick, easy to use.. get a copy!
