OK one of my mates brought up this idea. I have been thinking about it and think it is worth developing.. only in theory...anyway here it is

You have to have a liscence to catch fish, own a dog, drive a car, drive a boat, sell alcohol, own a gun, use fireworks, and for numerous occupations such as medicine, security etc.

[sorry if these aren't applicable in your country]

anwyay. i would consider parenting to require morse skill and training and have more risk involved than any of the above mentioned things. Why can ANYONE have kids? and do. i know it is a 'human' right and all this stuff. but maybe this should be rethought. Stupid people are replicating every day.. People with poor values, health, lifestyles etc. I think this is unacceptable. ok so the solution.. Parenting liscences.

Each potential parent must go to mandatory training theory and practical classes, be deemed competent to have children.

Problems:
- you would have to sterilise people or take children away from them if they refused to attend or failed the course.
- whose value systems, child raising methods would be deemed the best for society?
- there are a few more but i can't be bothered to list them

anyways what do you think?

you know that would be a good idea... So many reggins in america give birth and couldn't even support themselves. Then they complain and complain and go on welfare and all that crap.

but the problem would be all these reggins giving birth at 14-16. kids now-a-days (in america) have sex like its nothing. And population is growing, the sad thing is alot of these small kids go hungry because dey momma is a crack whore and they dont know who dey babies daddy is.

PS went on abit of a racist rant... and reggin means a black person for those who dont know.

I don't think having a parenting licence should be necessary, or even a good idea. People simply DO have the right to be parents. It's a born right that nature gave to them...and it should not be determined by a class, or a group of people, and taken away. You simply shouldn't be able to seterilize someone...without their authority, because of some legal "licence" to have a child. The thought alone it ridiculous. I definitely agree that to be a parent, you need to be a good parent or nothing, but I believe that should be determined later on in life, once the child is born. If they appear to be an unfit parent, and are neglecting/abusing the child, that's when the child should be removed from the home. Taking the right to HAVE a child away, should not be something the law can do (in my opinion).

Stupid people are replicating every day.. People with poor values, health, lifestyles etc. I think this is unacceptable. ok so the solution.. Parenting liscences.
Okay, I'll definitely agree with the stupid people are replicating part :D. It's true, and happens all of the time, sadly. Although, your next part...how the hell could people be judged by values, and lifestyle?!?1 Everyone has different values, and everyone has their own lifestyle. These are basically things that are totally opinionated, and cannot be judged (unless the lifestyle is ILLEGAL, or course...). I assume that if you had to get a licence to "own" children, it would go for adoption as well (well, it already does, kind of..)...but if they based their decision on those two things...values and lifestyle...tons of trouble and problems would arise. Holy shit, with all of the christians in the world, I'm sure gay adoption would become illegal...since they think being gay is such a disgusting, evil act ;)

So many reggins in america give birth and couldn't even support themselves. Then they complain and complain and go on welfare and all that crap.
And white people don't? lol.

while this all might be true it doesnt mean the idea is all that of a bad one. The fact is that if it even makes the slightest sense it would never pass because it voilates many ethics and laws.

It would prolly mean retarded people wouldn't be able to have kids. They would want a child to love just like any others but wouldnt be able to.

The laws it breaks would be the constiutional rights americans have such as roach said

Wow static, you just love to hate on black people. Well guess what? Blacks are not the leading group in teenage births; Hispanics are. Then, apparently since 1980 the number of teenage births to black teenagers has dropped by roughly 32% while the white teenagers only 28%. I guess those horny lil white girls just don't get it as well as those 'reggins' as you called them. This is not saying white girls have mad more teenage 'encounters' then blacks... or is it? In 1972 statistics show white teenagers(who settled at around 77 abortions) had 53 more abortions a year then black teenagers (who had around 23). Even today there is still a 30 abortion difference. Is it that black girls just like ****ing around more then white girls? Or does it perhaps show they are more willing to take responsibility for THIER actions?. Think about it.

And like forged sed,
I think it is just one more way our goverment can limit our freedom....

hmm has anyone read Brave New World. I do think that the idea of parenting liscences as i described is extreme and would only happen in a compltely dystopic society. However i do see a desperate need for more education and laws in the area. if you have to pass so many tests etc just to drive a car or boat. then you should have to know things to have kids.. Basics.. like nutritional information, when certain skills are developed etc. SO many children are 'retarded' .. they are slower than they should or could be simpley because parents don't read to them as children and don't feed them balanced diets etc. i don't think people are malicious i just think as a whole they are uneducated. There should also be tighter control on child abuse etc.

I think you should have more free optional help easily avaible, or in some cases forced lessons. I think we should not have the right to take the right to have a baby away but the right to make parents educate themselves about parenting.

well, it would stop alot of idiots pumping out criminals that have to steal stuff to survive... people who just dont care, they have kid after kid but cant take care of them.

but i dont like it. anyone has the right to have kids... nature gave it to us, who is to take it away? i aint gunna let anyone sterilize me :(

and as screwed up as it sounds, if a parents wants to bring up a criminal or a druggie, they know the consequences. the kid will soon enoug too. whose to tell them what their morals should be? and why shoulnt people get to raise their kids however they feel is best? morality is relative. you shouldnt sterilize people over it... you shouldnt kill people over it either, but sometimes if your morals are too different (someone wants to kill you for your shirt:p) you may have to defend yourself.

Interesting idea, but I just don’t think it would work in the real world. I believe that the largest problem with your theory, jaden, lies in the subjectivity of a question I believe your theory leaves unanswered: what it means to be a 'good' parent. Without a concrete definition of what it means to be a good parent, how would one even begin to enforce "mandatory training theory and practical classes". Indeed, who would lead such classes? Who's to say one person's better suited at being a parent than another?
...and do you really want all the children of this world raise in a similar fashion? The way we're brought up affects us all and helps shape who we are. Do you really want a planet full of clones? (Note: if you're going to argue against this point, go ahead, but please don’t start a nature vs. nurture thing here).
I believe that your idea 'might' just work, but with a slight change: scrap the whole license thing, and just put parents through a mandatory course in parenting...educating them is one thing, taking away their children is another.

...and another problem: how would you enforce "parenting licenses" ? Sure it might be easy in developed countries, but what about those still in development? I believe the financial costs far outweigh any potential future advantages...but then again...I might be wrong...after all...no country in history has ever, to my knowledge, enforced any "parenting licence" scheme...

I agree, but we already do. If someone is suspected of child abuse or neglect, or just did something wrong involving parenting, in some cases the parents ARE forced to take parenting classes...or they will loose their children.

I think toughening up the law on this, may be a good idea though. Some parents just aren't educated enough, or ready to take care of kids...and they can't deal with it rationally. Classes BEFORE any abuse were to happen, could definitely prevent it...and would be a good idea.

And who will pay for everyone to go to this course? I doubt the government will fund it. And saying stupid people shouldn't breed is bordering on something Hitler would do. It is a good idea for people to get educated on methods of teaching their kids, and how to look after them though. And how can you decide who is right when it comes to parenting, everyone values different things. And of course even if parents do the course nothing will make them follow what they have learned.

A parenting liscense...you do realize that half of the births in the US are accident right? As in blowing some load wasn't our intention? I would say over half of our births are like that, well over half. Most of em don't really want the baby anyway, but would feel bad by putting them up for adoption or aborting the pregnancy...what are you supposed to do about those babies if the parents refuse to get liscensed? Put them in a foster home? That's even worse than under-estabolished parent.

haha okay no one attribute this as one of my ideas. i just thought it was worth discussing. i know it is completely impractical. it highlights as roach said a way to prevent abuse cases before they happen, not just try to rectify the situation later.

Hmm i don't know what would happen to the ones taken away.. and i know abortion would skyrocket. which i am strongly oposed to :p but still .. don't any of you ever feel that your parents, or some that you see .. are severely underqualified?

thanks amrtin its good to be back;) but im still annoyed at you for your thoughts on women's suffrage :p

sometimes, yes i do feel that my parents are sometimes unqualified, and for those of you that have divorced parents more so. Well if you feel they are so unqualified, save some proof and emancipate them!

lol. but there realy is no legislation in place which provides for 'unqualified' there is for abuse, and sometiems neglect, but not really emotional neglect. Parents have feweer skills required of them than people do to own a dog
