Shadowrun (SNES)
Uh... There's an RPG I've never heard of?!
;
Earthbound (NES and SNES)
^_^ I have stories for you, my friend, but I think I'll save 'em
Ness is a unique character set in a unique game. I did enjoy the game, but I usually had different music playing <_<;
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
I couldn't put it down for a week! >_>; I thought the story and gameplay were excellent.
7th Saga (SNES)
I recommend you not get me started
I did like
some of the story elements...but the originality seemed a bit lacking. I couldn't get into the game...and I
love RPGs
Final Fantasy (in general) (NES, SNES, NGC, GB, GBA, and DS)
My
favorite is Final Fantasy V. I feel "best" is too...connotative and derivitive. You say Final Fantasy VI is "the best" but I strongly, boy howdy do I, disagree. I just found Final Fantasy V and, believe it or not, IV better. V just had a story I couldn't put down for a long time. IV...okay...VI
is better than IV...but I thought I'd give you a "What is this guy smorking?!" scare
I liked Crystal Chronicles and Tactics Advance. I found CC to be an innovative, multi-player game. It shines in many areas, and SquarEnix found other areas to improve upon. A CC game is upcoming for the DS ^_^ TA was greatly misunderstood. Marche isn't a selfish brat, as most make him out to be. He start of rather naive, but he matures very quickly over the course of the game. I found the battle system easy to comprehend. I actually liked the Judge system! I found it...innovative and unique.
I recommend not getting me started on the horrors of some other FF games >_>;
Crono Trigger
Must...have...sleep!! Okay...I lost a
lot of sleep over this game
I don't know how many times I had to play through it or beat the final boss before I could put it down -_-; Okay...so I still haven't quite put the game down...
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Calibur
;_; I need to beat the game with 100 Chaos... The best I've done is the C ending at 78 Choas... I once got Leila killed one time...and she turned into a Zombie T_T I never could get into Liches in that game... I average beating it in about 60h. In a rush, I can beat it in 32 with 25 Chaos, or less. I find that, for whatever reason, I get better scores, closer to 100 Chaos, the longer I play... I think I'm just more careful. I've logged something like...500h into that game... >_>; I have no life outside RPGs!
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
^_^ I had a lot of fun with this card game. I've probably beaten it...five or six times...
Tales of Symphonia
Ah... How I love thee...? I've logged over 150h, and I'm still playing it. I have to say...it does come close to taking the title for me...
I'll not induldge is some games
not listed ^_^
Baten Kaitos (NGC)
It's a love it or hate it game...and I
love it! There is just something I love about how they integrate the cards into the RPG playing elements, not to mention the story. If you don't like it, you're not going to like it. I gave it a whirl, and I found a style and presentation that I enjoyed. The fact that you have to, quickly, discover elemental properties and play to them makes a rather interesting challenge. The ease of the beginning is quickly offset by the difficulty of later levels. You also have to pay careful attention to the evolution of items or you may find yourself in a pickle, perhaps all too literally, in the middle of a very important battle. I find it most difficult to line up combinations -- such as making strawberry-milk >_< I find the storyline and gameplay enjoyable.
Megaman X: Command Mission (NGC)
I admit this isn't up there, highly ranking, but it is a worthwhile game. I also admit that it's probably better for a Megaman, aka: Rockman, fan, in the first place. You have to pay attention or you will be blown to smitherines. The ability to take a party of mechanoids and play to party strengths is given the twist of "virus" comperable infections that you can inflict, willingly, upon our PCs. It's really a radioactive "metal", but who's counting
The powerful attributes this "infection" confers is offset by the rate of radioactive decay that can quickly accumulate if you aren't paying attention.
Tales of Phantasia (SNES)
This game is, hands down, my
favorite SNES RPG, and it may well beat out Tales of Symphonia for the NGC. The story is exellent. The gameplay was very innovative for its time, and it remains most unique. The controls were easy to understand, and learning them made them become intuitive. It may have never been released State-side, but it still remains a great game with great story. I find that I like it much better than Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy V, and even Crono Trigger.
Sailor Moon: Another Story (SNES)
If you don't like Sailor Moon, SHUT UP! I do! Wait... My signature pretty well states that...doesn't it
; In anycase, AS had a great storyline, and the battle system had many interesting twists in it. The ability to combine, well, abilities made for some very interesting battles. The
one thing that I didn't like about this game is that they down-played Sailor Moon's universe-shattering powers and over-played Sailor Saturn's world-destroying powers -- in effect, they made Saturn stronger than Sailor Moon when that isn't the way it really is. In anycase, I enjoyed the game, so
Pokemon (in general)
Blue. Red. Green. Yellow.
The phenomina that spread over the world like...uh...I have no comparison
The games captured the imaginations of millions, and sparked one of the greatest video game pandemics, if not
the greatest, of all time. The manga sparked a game. The game sparked an anime. The anime sparked the card game. The anime exploded onto the big screen. In fact, Pokemon: The First Movie was the first
ever anime to be shown in theaters as
new. Princess Mononoke was the first anime ever seen in theaters, but that was after it's VHS debut
The first Pokemon Stadium was released, and the battles took a whole new look.
Silver. Gold. Crystal.
The pandemic saw no end in sight. The introduction of 100 new Pokemon was to battle the newly emergent Digimon (by comparison you dolts
). The craze almost seemed to stagnate and drop off at this point. Worried, Pokemon Stadium 2 was released to the streets. Pokemon Snap didn't prove as useful as once thought. The card game had hit its peak. Could anything revive Pokemon?
Ruby. Sapphire. Emerald.
Though slowed, the pandemic is not, yet, out of steam. Pokemon continues to pick up new imaginations. Its loses become slowed. It even manages to pick up a few who'd thought they'd never pick it up again, despite all appearances. Many more movies have been released, and the partner battles create a whole new atmosphere.
Pokemon Colesseum
A first attempt, this game saw some successes and some failures. The 3D remditions for each Pokemon seems a step in the right direction. The idea of playing a non-badguy who
steals other Pokemon for a good cause, ridding them of taint, sees some interesting appeal as well as the thought that there
is a darker side to Pokemon. It's a darker side that only the Manga has, fully, explored. It's got a maturity in it that only the manga has seen, and it attracts a larger viewing audience, or so is hoped.
Secret of Evermore (SNES)
I really enjoyed this game. I don't know what it was, but I seem to go against the crowd, here. I had a lot of fun playing this game. The idea of leveling up weapons and spells was innovative, to me. The unique presentation drew me to this game. I liked the story-elements, even if I didn't like the storyline at times. The controls were easy to adapt to.
Star Ocean (SNES)
Contrary to popular belief, SO didn't start on a Sony system
The SNES, and very first SO, was much like ToP in terms of gameplay. There were unique elements, and the story was certainly an easy clarifying point. I didn't find SO nearly as enjoyable as ToP, and it even fell short of FFV. It was certainly fun to play, and there were very few points that I thought didn't fit. Overall, it was done well.
Paper Mario (N64)
^_^ I
loved that game! It was fun. The presentation of the battles was unique, and that is hard to argue. It followed allong LotSS in terms of timed attacks, but it presented the story in an innovative fashion. I found it short, but it was, at the same time, extremely well done. I beat it in, about, a weeks time. It's too bad I can't find it anymore to buy it... I only rented it ;_;
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
I laughed so hard I had to turn my GameCube off! Literally! This game was fun, funny, challenging, innovative, and the gameplay just plain rocked! There were few points in the game I either wasn't having fun or wasn't laughing. I'd say I was always doing one or the other, but
never did I do neither. To be honest, it does feel kind of short...especially considering I had over 40h logged the first time I beat it
Phantasy Star Online Episodes I and II (NGC)
I don't pay to play this game online, first off
I, however, do enjoy it. The story is...interesting, and they do involve elements to keep you hooked. I seem to recall it being extremely hard to start off with a caster character... They just don't do well without spells... The hunter is an excellent first choice. The ranger, I find, is a good medium if you want a challenge yet want to keep it simple. That is, of course, what the game will tell you ^_^;
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
I'll tell you...if you don't, at least, like this game...there may be something wrong with you RPG senses
It's funny and fun to play. It's LotSS with a whole new light, and the inclussion of Luigi makes for some interesting gameplay ^_^
Megaman Battle Network (GBA and NGC)
I know the NGC title has a different name, but I don't care!
I find the battles to be interesting. The grid-network of the GBA makes for interesting timed-moves as well as finding myself prone to accidents. The NGC side-scrolling forces you to realize that you're on a whole new kind of gameplay. The stories mesh really well together, and you can, easily, create a seemless transition between the games. The use of battle chips (aka: cards) creates an interesting balance. If you don't have the right selection, you're stuck with the basic Rock Buster attack -- which is devistatingly weak...even at it's strongest. You find that planning ahead is the only thing keeping you alive, and you'd best plan well.
In conclussion...
I'm an RPG nut, possibly even a bit of a fanboy -_-; , who can't get his fill. I'd say
my top (heh, pun) are Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia -- both are Namco titles (well, duh as their from the Tales series
)
EDIT:
I disabled smilies in this post because BF said I had too many -_-;
