This thread isn't designed to just post your favorite Nintendo RPG, describe it, and not read any of the other posts. Name your favorite Nintendo RPG, describe it, and then give your positive/negative comments on those RPGs mentioned before you. Don't simply list, discuss.

As no one has posted before me, I can't comment on anyone else's favorite RPG yet. Mine is Shadowrun for SNES. I'm wondering if anyone else has played this, because it was pretty interesting. It's a futuristic setting, and a fairly hard game. A lot of cool elements to it. Random battles are in the form of snipers who appear at random building windows and open fire on you. Your party is created by hiring mercenaries with the money you've taken off corpses. You upgrade stats by purchasing cybernetic enhancements or buying better weapons. All the battles are in real-time, and a lot of them are really awesome, like laying siege to a high-security office building in a bloody shoot-out massacre. Very, very interesting, really excellent, well done story, and my personal favorite RPG for any Nintendo system.

I played this game a few weeks back, but it was really hard for me, I can't find out exactly how to heal. The general concept is nice though, it's not your everyday RPG, it's like putting A SNES Half-Life with RPG Elements then blending it into a milkshake. Battles were fairly hard for the most part, as you were sometimes outnumbered in the beginning, as I remember. I didn't get very far into the game but when I played it, it was enjoyable more then most, I must admit. Now I'll go ask Azrael on AIM how you heal in the game. :p

Darkmatter said:
Please tell me someone else has played it here besides me and Shadow1psc. The game was not your average RPG. Rather, it was more set in modern times then anything else. Imagine being a hero who uses everyday items to fight bad guys? Sounds pretty weird at first, and most people consider Earthbound weird because it's not the average hack and slash RPG. It's pretty unique in itself for being a modern-day RPG where you are a small boy who smacks things with a baseball bat. But that's just the jist of the story. You eat food for HP, bonuses, you get an ATM Card, it's really awesome because the game is set around a basic evil that has influence over most things. You find yourself bashing cops and dogs and even animals that are under evils control.
Aside my Earthbound post above, let's talk music. Most video game music doesn't appeal to most people, and I myself can see that in most of the games I play, but I love SNES Video Game music above all, and Earthbound probably has some of the best video game music for the SNES that I've ever heard. The blend of music is really wacky at times, and there's even a rock-in roll/techno theme for the last boss fight, which I thought was awesome. There's a special music for each area you're in, and the music actually fits each area, which is cool.

I've never played Earthbound of Shadow Run. Sorry Az, no comments for you punk! :)

My favorite was Super Mario RPG. I loved to mindlessly train in it. My favorite spot for a long time being Booster's Pass where there was a Lakitu. I became addicted to it because of my brother who beat the game before me as I watched. I treasure the time I spent watching it with my family now that alot of them are moving out. Good nostalgia.

The battle system was neat because you were able to influence the battle through pressing the buttons at certain times. This action element was not too popular in RPG's at the time so I very much enjoyed the turn based battle system. Just a great overall game.

No love for teh Brainlord? 7th Saga? For shame Ryan :p

As for my favorite Nintendo RPG, Tales of Symphonia was great, then I rememebered FFVI was on SNES ^_^ FFVI was quite possibly the greatest RPG on any nintendo console, only Chrono Trigger may be said to even come close to it.

Final Fantasy 6 is the best one on the SNES, however I think Chrono Trigger is on par with it as far as being the greatest SNES RGP period. Both games were made by Squaresoft, so they bankedregardless of who we think is best. And you know my reasons for loving it Wes, but mainly a mix of unique characters with the music. The fighting wasn't anything you didnt or wouldn't see in previous Final Fantasy games for the SNES, so it wasn't anything special. The Esper System was cool though.

I'll mention those later, because neither had good music. The one thing Brain Lord has was puzzles. I swear to god there were some hard ass questions in that game, to the very end atleast. About stars and math and flargen. It's downside was probably being a little too hard at times. Theres one area where everything is totally black. You have a map but it doesn'y show you jack, and you can;t see anything no matter what fairys you use. Ir's hard to get through even for someone who knows how to operate the area. All else, it rocked. :)

Ogre battle 64 was a really good game too.you could choose the way you played alot.you could go the cold heartless way or the nice people saving way.There were a massive amount of items tons osf side quests and people to join your army.

They game play is kinda of turned based.the only real down side was you didnt make the choices in battle.an automated battle system did :(

I didn't like the Law and Chaos system from Ogre Battle. You only really need 3 armies for that game. One army to stay at the main base. Two fan out and kill the other targets. Legions were not necessary unless you charmed a lot of warriors to your side. Heck, I was soooo chaotic. My main force was this:

Myself (General)
Siren (Purple haired female spellcaster)
Cerebrus
Black Knight with Ice Axe

I'll stray this back on topic.

7th Saga. For reasons unknown, I really enjoyed this game. It's lucid style of gameplay was very easy for anyone to adapt to. The main concept was to level up and levelup some more, go fight a boss and get runes to fulfill your quest. There's 7 Runes in all, or 8, I forget. Your opponets (The other characters besides the one you're playing as) sometimes get a Rune before you did. Since you see them regularly, they may fight you when you talk to them if you have runes and they want them. The storyline is sort of bland, but overall it's a pretty cool game I think. Some downsides are that leveling up so much can be repetitive, combined with lack of a useful and thrilling, entertaining or grasping storyline or plot, it gets rather dull after a good while. That's why I take a break then play it again. Take a break, rense, repeat. Woks for the most part until I feel like setting my time towards another RPG.

Shadowrun (SNES)
Uh... There's an RPG I've never heard of?! o_O;

Earthbound (NES and SNES)
^_^ I have stories for you, my friend, but I think I'll save 'em ;) Ness is a unique character set in a unique game. I did enjoy the game, but I usually had different music playing <_<;

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
I couldn't put it down for a week! >_>; I thought the story and gameplay were excellent.

7th Saga (SNES)
:rolleyes: I recommend you not get me started ;) I did like some of the story elements...but the originality seemed a bit lacking. I couldn't get into the game...and I love RPGs o_O

Final Fantasy (in general) (NES, SNES, NGC, GB, GBA, and DS)
My favorite is Final Fantasy V. I feel "best" is too...connotative and derivitive. You say Final Fantasy VI is "the best" but I strongly, boy howdy do I, disagree. I just found Final Fantasy V and, believe it or not, IV better. V just had a story I couldn't put down for a long time. IV...okay...VI is better than IV...but I thought I'd give you a "What is this guy smorking?!" scare ;)
I liked Crystal Chronicles and Tactics Advance. I found CC to be an innovative, multi-player game. It shines in many areas, and SquarEnix found other areas to improve upon. A CC game is upcoming for the DS ^_^ TA was greatly misunderstood. Marche isn't a selfish brat, as most make him out to be. He start of rather naive, but he matures very quickly over the course of the game. I found the battle system easy to comprehend. I actually liked the Judge system! I found it...innovative and unique.
I recommend not getting me started on the horrors of some other FF games >_>;

Crono Trigger
Must...have...sleep!! Okay...I lost a lot of sleep over this game :p I don't know how many times I had to play through it or beat the final boss before I could put it down -_-; Okay...so I still haven't quite put the game down...

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Calibur
;_; I need to beat the game with 100 Chaos... The best I've done is the C ending at 78 Choas... I once got Leila killed one time...and she turned into a Zombie T_T I never could get into Liches in that game... I average beating it in about 60h. In a rush, I can beat it in 32 with 25 Chaos, or less. I find that, for whatever reason, I get better scores, closer to 100 Chaos, the longer I play... I think I'm just more careful. I've logged something like...500h into that game... >_>; I have no life outside RPGs!

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
^_^ I had a lot of fun with this card game. I've probably beaten it...five or six times...

Tales of Symphonia
Ah... How I love thee...? I've logged over 150h, and I'm still playing it. I have to say...it does come close to taking the title for me...

I'll not induldge is some games not listed ^_^

Baten Kaitos (NGC)
It's a love it or hate it game...and I love it! There is just something I love about how they integrate the cards into the RPG playing elements, not to mention the story. If you don't like it, you're not going to like it. I gave it a whirl, and I found a style and presentation that I enjoyed. The fact that you have to, quickly, discover elemental properties and play to them makes a rather interesting challenge. The ease of the beginning is quickly offset by the difficulty of later levels. You also have to pay careful attention to the evolution of items or you may find yourself in a pickle, perhaps all too literally, in the middle of a very important battle. I find it most difficult to line up combinations -- such as making strawberry-milk >_< I find the storyline and gameplay enjoyable.

Megaman X: Command Mission (NGC)
I admit this isn't up there, highly ranking, but it is a worthwhile game. I also admit that it's probably better for a Megaman, aka: Rockman, fan, in the first place. You have to pay attention or you will be blown to smitherines. The ability to take a party of mechanoids and play to party strengths is given the twist of "virus" comperable infections that you can inflict, willingly, upon our PCs. It's really a radioactive "metal", but who's counting ;) The powerful attributes this "infection" confers is offset by the rate of radioactive decay that can quickly accumulate if you aren't paying attention.

Tales of Phantasia (SNES)
This game is, hands down, my favorite SNES RPG, and it may well beat out Tales of Symphonia for the NGC. The story is exellent. The gameplay was very innovative for its time, and it remains most unique. The controls were easy to understand, and learning them made them become intuitive. It may have never been released State-side, but it still remains a great game with great story. I find that I like it much better than Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy V, and even Crono Trigger.

Sailor Moon: Another Story (SNES)
If you don't like Sailor Moon, SHUT UP! I do! Wait... My signature pretty well states that...doesn't it o_O; In anycase, AS had a great storyline, and the battle system had many interesting twists in it. The ability to combine, well, abilities made for some very interesting battles. The one thing that I didn't like about this game is that they down-played Sailor Moon's universe-shattering powers and over-played Sailor Saturn's world-destroying powers -- in effect, they made Saturn stronger than Sailor Moon when that isn't the way it really is. In anycase, I enjoyed the game, so :p

Pokemon (in general)
Blue. Red. Green. Yellow.
The phenomina that spread over the world like...uh...I have no comparison :p The games captured the imaginations of millions, and sparked one of the greatest video game pandemics, if not the greatest, of all time. The manga sparked a game. The game sparked an anime. The anime sparked the card game. The anime exploded onto the big screen. In fact, Pokemon: The First Movie was the first ever anime to be shown in theaters as new. Princess Mononoke was the first anime ever seen in theaters, but that was after it's VHS debut ;) The first Pokemon Stadium was released, and the battles took a whole new look.
Silver. Gold. Crystal.
The pandemic saw no end in sight. The introduction of 100 new Pokemon was to battle the newly emergent Digimon (by comparison you dolts ;) ). The craze almost seemed to stagnate and drop off at this point. Worried, Pokemon Stadium 2 was released to the streets. Pokemon Snap didn't prove as useful as once thought. The card game had hit its peak. Could anything revive Pokemon?
Ruby. Sapphire. Emerald.
Though slowed, the pandemic is not, yet, out of steam. Pokemon continues to pick up new imaginations. Its loses become slowed. It even manages to pick up a few who'd thought they'd never pick it up again, despite all appearances. Many more movies have been released, and the partner battles create a whole new atmosphere.
Pokemon Colesseum
A first attempt, this game saw some successes and some failures. The 3D remditions for each Pokemon seems a step in the right direction. The idea of playing a non-badguy who steals other Pokemon for a good cause, ridding them of taint, sees some interesting appeal as well as the thought that there is a darker side to Pokemon. It's a darker side that only the Manga has, fully, explored. It's got a maturity in it that only the manga has seen, and it attracts a larger viewing audience, or so is hoped.

Secret of Evermore (SNES)
I really enjoyed this game. I don't know what it was, but I seem to go against the crowd, here. I had a lot of fun playing this game. The idea of leveling up weapons and spells was innovative, to me. The unique presentation drew me to this game. I liked the story-elements, even if I didn't like the storyline at times. The controls were easy to adapt to.

Star Ocean (SNES)
Contrary to popular belief, SO didn't start on a Sony system ;) The SNES, and very first SO, was much like ToP in terms of gameplay. There were unique elements, and the story was certainly an easy clarifying point. I didn't find SO nearly as enjoyable as ToP, and it even fell short of FFV. It was certainly fun to play, and there were very few points that I thought didn't fit. Overall, it was done well.

Paper Mario (N64)
^_^ I loved that game! It was fun. The presentation of the battles was unique, and that is hard to argue. It followed allong LotSS in terms of timed attacks, but it presented the story in an innovative fashion. I found it short, but it was, at the same time, extremely well done. I beat it in, about, a weeks time. It's too bad I can't find it anymore to buy it... I only rented it ;_;

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
I laughed so hard I had to turn my GameCube off! Literally! This game was fun, funny, challenging, innovative, and the gameplay just plain rocked! There were few points in the game I either wasn't having fun or wasn't laughing. I'd say I was always doing one or the other, but never did I do neither. To be honest, it does feel kind of short...especially considering I had over 40h logged the first time I beat it :p

Phantasy Star Online Episodes I and II (NGC)
I don't pay to play this game online, first off ;) I, however, do enjoy it. The story is...interesting, and they do involve elements to keep you hooked. I seem to recall it being extremely hard to start off with a caster character... They just don't do well without spells... The hunter is an excellent first choice. The ranger, I find, is a good medium if you want a challenge yet want to keep it simple. That is, of course, what the game will tell you ^_^;

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
I'll tell you...if you don't, at least, like this game...there may be something wrong with you RPG senses o_O It's funny and fun to play. It's LotSS with a whole new light, and the inclussion of Luigi makes for some interesting gameplay ^_^

Megaman Battle Network (GBA and NGC)
I know the NGC title has a different name, but I don't care!
I find the battles to be interesting. The grid-network of the GBA makes for interesting timed-moves as well as finding myself prone to accidents. The NGC side-scrolling forces you to realize that you're on a whole new kind of gameplay. The stories mesh really well together, and you can, easily, create a seemless transition between the games. The use of battle chips (aka: cards) creates an interesting balance. If you don't have the right selection, you're stuck with the basic Rock Buster attack -- which is devistatingly weak...even at it's strongest. You find that planning ahead is the only thing keeping you alive, and you'd best plan well.

In conclussion...
I'm an RPG nut, possibly even a bit of a fanboy -_-; , who can't get his fill. I'd say my top (heh, pun) are Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia -- both are Namco titles (well, duh as their from the Tales series :p )

EDIT:
I disabled smilies in this post because BF said I had too many -_-;

Of course you are a RPG nut, bamthedoc.

Ogre Battle 64 was a good game. I have recently gotten back to playing it. However, my only disliking was the Agliment system. In the early goings, its hard to make yourself Lawful. You are stronger than your opponents, you face Knights and Valks a lot more (the lawful physical classes). Doing each of these causes your alignment to drop to the chaos.

However later, you fight more Choatic warriors like Warlocks, Sirens, Cerebrus, Tiamats etc.
Attacking these puppies around thier level will easily get you some Law :D. Law and Choas determines what classes you can turn your people into.

My fav was always the Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage on the 64, how you could build up your caracters in any way you wanted, the large land to explore and the great many battles to fight, and the really cool locking weapons(warfang anybody)

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicls
I really can't point out any negatives except no voice overs.
The reasons why I liked it because of the so many different things in it. I really don't wanna talk a lot because I wanna play the game. See ya! :angry --Shadow

Personally i hated ogre battle 64 :p

FF3 and Secret of Mana would have gotten my vote had pokemon not come along. Yes, im man enough to admit that i went to the Queen Anne cruise ship where they had a national competition and got ranked 12th (psychic pokemon are hax, dugtrio is a cheap bastard). I played the green version for advance but for some god-forsaken reason, i can't get into saffron city so i just gave up. Gold/Silver get's my vote.

*shrug* Everybody has a personal preferance. That's why there is no best game. You simply have favorites.

I can't wait for the FF:CC for the NDS.

What's funny...I didn't even tip the iceberg of RPGs that I like...

The only thing I hate about that game is the silly Law/Chaos System. It totally ruined the ability to get those cool characters you wanted to use, but it was the challenege aspect :D.

I collected pokemon cards when I was a kid, and I had a special place for Pokemon Stadium in my heart for some reason. I can play the game and endlessly have fun with it since there's a few pokemon I really enjoy, for small reasons. Like attitude, appearance, etc. FF3 and Secret of Mana need no explanation; they rock.

Recently, I have been plying Final Fantasy Mystic Quest a lot. I beat it a few nights ago and let me tell you, it wasn't what I was expecting. I cleared the way to the boss and then figured I would try and beat him without going back and leveling up a bunch. I ended up having decent difficulty thrashing him into the ground. It was really sad, however the game is still quite enjoyable and fairly easy for most people to play and fget the hang of.

Tis not challenging, but still fun.

The simple solution do defeating bosses, power level and thrash them.
