So I have noticed a trend on this, the intranet, that whenever there is whenever anyone asks for advice on Graphic novels there are always three constants. As inevitable as the fucking tide someone is going to mention Watchmen, V for Vendetta and Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. It is because of this I picked up the first volume of The Sandman, and after reading it, I had to make this thread.
I mean, I remember downloading the first issue a few years ago when I was getting into comics and I couldn't get through the first issue without finding something more interesting to do. As the years went on however all I ever hear is people rave about this GN, and I finally broke down and bought the first volume. Okay so what the hell? If I ever develop insomnia I think I have a cure. This was sooo boring.
Seriously, am I missing something? Did everyone forget to mention that the first 8 issues suck ass, and you have to struggle though them to get to something interesting? What the hell is the appeal. Granted I figure there are some things some people might like about it, but to be listed as one of the best ever? Almost nothing happens, there isn't any semblance of an interesting story, and the character.. is boring as hell.
I was going to comment on how the art sucked ass too, but my understanding is it gets better. Plus The Dark Knight Returns (usually listed fourth on that list of GN everyone jizzes themselves over) had a good story with art that looked like it was drawn by an autistic blind kid with parkinsins, so I was willing to forgive this at the time.
So can I hope to find anyone that agrees this is overrated, or that I judged it to quickly on the first volume, or that i'm completely off and this is the best GN ever written. Cause I seriously have to know from the people who recommend it.
