From what I remember about programing, I believe that an invalid checksum is a bad line of code, not an actual file.
You may want to drop a line to Blizzard support before splicing in something.

support@blizzard.com

Have you tried re-installing the program?
It sounds like you have a corrupt file.

If you haven't re-installed, and do re-install, BACK UP YOUR MAPS, AND REPLAYS, before you uninstall.

I reinstalled several times on a couple of different computers. I get the invalid checksum message when I try to install the 1.09b update and claims that the file checksum is invalid. It appears that the copy of staredit on my CD is bad.

Hmmm... This sounds awfully like warez...

But if you can't get StarEdit installed, download SCXE, StarCraftXtraEditor. It's the best there is.

The problem is not getting staredit installed... It installs and runs fine without a problem. It shows as build: Mar 26 1998 16:23:22 in the about window.

My problem is that I cannot install the 1.09b update because it says the staredit checksum is incorrect. I need someone to send me a valid copy of the file so that the update will install properly.

Have you tried the support address yet?

support@blizzard.com

Because I really don't think that any downloadable file is going to help you.
The only thing in my PC is "Checksum.class" its a java utility that is zipped, and compressed for storage.
I am thinking it's part of the original Windows install routines.
It has no accessable location, and can not be copied from the search results to give you.

A quick search at Google comes up with this address, to give you an idea of what I mean, as far as a checksum being some form of data, not a file.

http://www.math.utah.edu/~beebe/software/filehdr/node15.html

Write the support address, they will probably just tell you to do a complete uninstall, with instructions, and then re-install.

One last question, you stated that you, "reinstalled several times on a couple of different computers".
Is there a big honkin scratch on your CD,,, or could it have been left in the sun too long?
Because if it's doing the exact same error on several machines, it sounds like the source disk has problems.

Okay... I repeat... When doing an update, the update checks every file in the installation for a file checksum to confirm that the files are original and unmodified.. I'm a programmer and I know how file checksums work. The update program is complaining that the staredit.exe file is corrupt and not an original file. Therefore, I believe my copy of the original software is somehow damaged. I know for a fact that a copy of the original file will correct the problem since I had to do the same thing about 2 years ago but I have since lost the original file. I just need some help to get this uncorrupted file.

OK, now we're getting down to the nitty gritty of the problem.
Now, let's make sure just exacly what you want before I, or someone else starts attaching files that you don't need.
In my files, I have 3 files maked StarEdit.
One is 992KB, it is an application file, and has a planet for an icon.
Another is 172 KB, it is a help file, looks like a question mark.
The last is 3.40 KB, it is a .cnt file, and looks like a data file.
If these three are not what you are needing, please tell us where we should be looking in order to properly help you, I found nothing on the disks that matched.

I know I need the application file with the planet icon... I can't remember if I needed anything else, but the staredit.exe file I need for sure. My staredit.exe application file is 988K... now remember, I need the version 1.0 of the file directly off the CD... I cannot use one that has already been upgraded.

O K, I have what you need, from the original installation, on a PC that has never seen an update.
But,
I need an email address to send the attachment, the limit here is 200KB.
Email me, and I will attach to the reply.
Hopefully, that will improve your circumstances.

Next time, please read the thread, and ask further questions about StarEdit and everything related to Map makings in the Use Map Settings forum.

Thread closed, it was a bump of 8 months.
