So I have this friend where he bought some chip or something similar like that for his Nintendo DS, it's like one the size of half your index finger, the other the size of your thumbnail. Anyhoo, with these, he's able to have emulators, mods, etc, even stepmania ( DDR ) and something similar to a photoshop on it. Since he's away, and I'm planning on buying the DS very soon, does anyone know what I'm talking about before I buy it? I'm anxious. =(

Acutally nevermind, a little research and I found it. EDGE (DS FLASH CART SDHC COMPATIBLE) in the Nintendo DS Development category

That's for anyone interested that owns a DS.

They are called flash carts. ask your friend for his brand. if he is being gay and not telling you or you want to confirm popular brands here are the ones i know of.

M3DS Real
CycloDS Evolution
R4DS

I do not own a DS. My knowledge is based on what i read up on in /v/.

R4 and M3 are made by the same people. R4 gets firmware updates first but it is sloppy. M3 gets later but better updates. CycloDS i dont know much about but their homepage looks active with firmware updates.

R4 popularity has dropped i think. i haven't seen much on it. So it comes down to Cyclo or M3. I think Cyclo might be better. i read somewhere that their parts are better

So if I got the cyclo one, I just USB drag drop ROM's I downloaded from some NDS ROM site and I can play those games and such?

Edit: I don't want to sound newbie about it, but do you need something in the game slot too in order to play ROM's or something, I noticed he had some cartridge in his DS too .. can't remember though.

They use a microSD card to store files such as hombrew/roms. Yes it will work like a USB. The SD card goes into the flash cart which is the size of a DS cart.

If you mean the GBA port on the DS he has one of these 3. A RAM expansion(allows more memory for homebrew such as the opera browser and maybe GBA games), a GBA flash cart or a port that does nothing but keep dust/dirt out.

I really suggest you find a better community for help or look up the rest on your own. Your firend will know a lot more so get the info from there.. What i know is based on my own tiny research/assumptions and what my friends use. I am going with either M3 Real or Cyclo in the future when i get a DS.

One last note. Please make an effort to buy a few games or at least 1.

Definitely so =P My friend gave me the site already to a cheap edge chip that he said is best and is doing fine with, just if I put songs on my DS, I hope it doesn't sound like crap .. unless there's something to modify it to have some bass or something.

i have a NDS, and ive bought a R4 card for it, u fit a mini sd card in it, download the roms for it, and chuck them on it, then you can play the game on the computer, the sd card i have is 1GB, so i can fit about 10 or so games on it at a time, its pretty good. :) hope this helped
