what do you mean exactly by this word "restore", because it can mean more than one thing ?

about your error it is clearly that something is missing, that you don't have something enough, because this is the type of error that occurs usually when the system isn't powerful enough to run an aplication.

There are alot of Dell's computers that can not run source. I for instance build myself my own computers.
If u say that ones worked fine, the first thing that is coming into my mind is to reinstall the operating system.

More than likely you arn't meeting video card requirements. CS 1.6 will play because it doesn't have high requirements, but CSS won't because it does.

Do you know the video card in your system? If you liked 1.6 I would suggest just playing that.

It's not a hardware problem. You didn't tick off a server administrator, did you?

It's not unlikely that a server admin found a way to mess with your profile's config files. Either that, or you screwed it up yourself. It sounds to me like you might have corrupted video settings. Try this, first of all: right-click CS:S in the list of games, click Properties, and open the Launch Options window. Copy and paste the following into the window: -d3d -width 800 -height 600, hit enter, and run the game. That'll launch the game with an 800x600 screen size in Direct3D mode (which, regardless of your graphics card, you should be able to run on a modern PC).

If that doesn't work, send me an email at master.america@gmail.com and I'll get back to you as soon as I can with another suggestion. In the meantime, try this: open your Steamapps folder (wherever that might be) and delete your account name's folder. Start Steam again and enter your username and password. It'll download some stuff and then use default files again. You'll have to redo your config files again, but eh... that's why it helps to have backups.

In the four years I've played Counter-Strike and Source I've yet to see an admin change a config enough that the game would actually crash, and I've never heard of it crashing because of a changed config. In all probability it is a hardware problem since he has already reinstalled the game.

Since he said he has a generic Dell one can simply say that more than likely he has Intel Extreme graphics as his GPU. Meaning it would be difficult for him to launch the game without having problems, and then if he gets it running the game won't go above 20 FPS even with the largest configs.

Get us the name of your GPU(Graphics Card) and we can work from there. Without it I can only offer the same old 'Delete your steam folders' 'Reinstall' 'Reformat'. Also note that if you do have a nice/decent graphcis card it could be the source engine itself. Many people have had a hard time getting the game running intially.

Simple Answer: If you do have Intel Extreme Graphics as your GPU then you'll want to buy a copy of Half-Life and play Counter-Strike 1.6 instead. Though if you were running it fine before with good FPS then it may be caused by an update by Valve, so please get me your graphics card specifications.

Edit: Source is only D3D correct? I wasn't aware of an opengl emulation.

Now that I think about it, you're right on the D3D thing. Can't remember about the OGL emulation thing, but... couldn't it be running in Software mode? I dunno... I haven't been able to play for a while, and it never hurts to be sure. I have had my settings hacked by server admins in Source before, but that was a while ago and Valve claimed that it was fixed. Who knows, though... they screw up their own fixes all the time. I haven't played the game or browsed the Steam forums in a while, though, so I wouldn't know what CS:S's current issues are.

If you've got integrated graphics (read the post above), then you've found your problem; otherwise, follow my instructions posted above.
