I've noticed that a lot of the new rock songs all share one common characterisitc: they're strange. From the song "Somebody Told Me," by The Killers to "Vitamin R" by Chevelle, music seems to have incorporated a new trend.

And when I say "wierd," I don't mean that they have strange ways of communicating their message: it just seems like they don't have a message. I'm not bitching about it, and I'm not saying that this is a bad thing; if anything, I'm a bit intrigued.

Lyrics from the song "Somebody Told Me":

Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looks like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
Of course, one could argue that every decade has had it's share of nonsensical music, such as music from The Doors to The Beatles, but I don't think it's reached the same degree as we see today. Even the "I am the Walrus" song had a purpose (The Beatles wanted to make a completely abstract song because people kept analyzing all of their others ones).

The two songs I mentioned aren't the only ones that I've seen lately that have been obscure.

Maybe I'm just shallow :( ...

Meh, I think people are just not wanting to make more Cookie Cutter music as much, and the new "Punk" generation is happening. I don't mind the song by the Killers, because I like the chorus.

Music has been like that for a while, like led zepplin- they had some songs that didnt really make much sense but they were still considered awesome.

Well with bands like Modest Mouse (an older band, recently getting attention from the media), Franz Ferdinand, and the Postal Service, the media seems to be going for the whole stereotypical "indie rock" sound. What annoys me is that everyone thinks this is a new sound, when it's been done a many times before. It makes me want to eat small children.
