I am looking for a good Mp3 player to use when running. So it should be compact, and be using flash memory. I have been looking at the iRiver iFP-790. Any suggestions?

Not really. I am going to be using it for money, and my sony diskman is about the size of my hand and putting that in my pocket, and the fact that even though it has skip protection, it still skips if you have it go up and down fastly. So for me, no it is not a waste of money.

It is 180.00, then the expense of legally downloading songs.

Actually found a site for 150. But if you want to find another site that goes cheaper or another, that is the best I have found. It also is highly rated.

My labtop is like a mp3 player, especially with Wi Fi. Did I mention the broken screen?

I am going to assume your runs are between 15 - 30 minutes in duration (I do about 30 minute runs every other day or so). That is about.. 10 or so average length songs right? Why do you need to pay for all of that extra storage if the primary use is going to be for running? You can get a 32 MB MP3 player for dirt cheap, or get double the storage with a 64 MB.

Well I will also be using it for other stuff. For car trips, school, and just something to listen to. I just put running in there because I want the Mp3 player to be small and have very good skip protection. One of the reasons I wanted flash memory.

Also the iPod is out of my price range.

Get an iPod mini, unlike my iPod which is like 20gb with about 15 I will probably never use, you could get like a 5gb mini which is compact, and holds enough memory for all your songs...Although don't expect me to find prices for you...

I have a Creative MuVo MP3 Player (128 MB capacity) and it's brilliant. Got it for around 60$ off eBay one year ago. You should be able to get the sequel thingy (MuVo NX with 256 MB) for the same price by now. As for the thing itself:
- perfect sound quality
- no skipping
- fast and easy data transfer over USB
- can handle any type of file
- very very small
- no display (the NX version has one, but its the same size, still)
- very shitty earphones coming with it (get Sennheiser MX500 or something like that)

I just wear pants with larger pockets and carry my cd player on the go. Plus I wouldn't want to half to shuffle through all of those songs. All just seems like a money leaching hassle.

Even if it was in my price range, I don't want a hard drive based MP3 player. It is also a bit to big and I don't want it jumping in my pocket. The flash based are much better. Plus that iRiver has a thing you can put on your arm and the mp3 player attaches to it.
