or do you think that a new company will emerge, more user-friendly and therefore taking over the world so to speak?

Everything eventully falls. Look at IBM. It was probably the most recognized company making computers, and what not for 50 years. Now most people don't even have a good idea what IBM is.

It will probably last for a long time, and it will last for a long time unless they make a huge mistake.

I think no. Unless Bill Gates can come up with something to beat everyone again, then Microsoft could be asily forgotten, but that's just my opinion. I've heard a lot of cool things about Linux as well, so yah.

I agree with Ace, in the near future Linux will smash windows, If it had more games ported for it, everyone would operate with it.
Some good about linux:
Its Free
Its Less Vulnerable as aposed to windows
Its user friendly
it has FF built in it.

Well, nothing lasts forever, but, realistically, Microsoft and Windows are a standard used throughout the world today. That standard isn't going away anytime soon, despite what Unix junkies say.

It's free for now to gain popularity.
It's less vulnerable since the target audience is not currently using this mainstream.
It's not user friendly, and is in fact, a little bit more complicated to use. People who have a hard time with computers, will have a hard time with UNIX-based platforms.
FF?

That is a common misconception.
How is that?

It's secure.
It has no viruses.
No spyware.
Tons of software

It's not as known as windows. If the roles were switched, there would be the same amount of virus's out for Linux as Windows.

Actually making a unix virus that does anything destructive would be quite hard...

And linux is more known than you think. It is quite popular now, and distros are getting easier and easier for a general audience. It is still second to windows, but the leads may switch in the future. Microsoft Window's fate will probably be determined by their next release. Of course nothing will beat them quickly...but I think Longhorn will either make or break windows.

Linux is more secure since it is open-source.

The point is that with open-source you have people working for the sake of security free of charge, and they are a lot. Sending 1000 people on one security hole is more efficient than sending 10 overpaid fat Microsoft-nerds to fix 1000 bugs, since the code is shite in the first place. Go figure.

Linux is becoming more and more popular, and because of it's Open Source capabilities, I think it will become more popular in time. But Linux is not more "user-friendly". It's a little more difficult to learn to use than Windows, although it is becoming easier.

Linux is already beginning to dominate the server industry.

ACtually if you try a distro like Xandros, or linspire....the use of a konsole is almost un-needed. The hardest thing about some linux distros is configuring everything...yet the newer more mainstreem distros have tools that make it as simple as using Windows.
