MFing

I'm oh so very new to D2, so I figured this was the best place for a question like this..

What exactly is MF, i'm pretty sure it stands for Magic Finder or something the of the sort, correct?
Is there an actual MF rating for my character? If so where do I see my rating, and how can I upgrade it?
Also, is MF just a multiplayer thing? Because I do lots of single player as well.
