What do you think of selfmanipulation? Can such a thing even exist or is everything we do selfmanipulation in one way or another. I'm not going post everything I know or think about this topic right now but I'd like to see what you guys think. The idea of selfmanipulation is making yourself happy when basically you're not. Here's some examples of what I'm talking about:

Music - Listening to happy music to get into a better mood and forget problems.
Drugs - Selfintoxication to forget problems and be happy.
Ignorance and distraction - Ignoring your problems by controlling your mind and focusing on something else.
Sports - Naturally forcing your body to send out endorphines.

Possible opposites:

Following your feelings - Trying to get over something by crying and re-thinking.
Venting - Selfmutiliation, exploding anger.
Depression - Not wanting to get over something and staying in a bad mood.

Comments, opinions, ideas? I often hear that the above 4 things are equal to not getting over something and keeping it inside yourself which could lead to problems and complexes at a later stage, what's with that?

Rather interesting thread here, Kor. I'm not sure if you are against people forcing themself to be happy or not, your last line sort of threw me off. But when I get upset over something (beings I'm manic, it's normally nothing...and when it is, it's handled the same way.), I normally just sit around and listen to music and let it blow over until I'm not upset about it anymore. Or, I talk to a few people I know. It's important to never depend on other people for happiness, BUT, I do have someone who acts as a morphine, someone who just seems to make my problems melt away. I suppose I'm lucky to have that, but for those who don't, I normally encourage them to try and keep their mind off of that garbage and work on something more productive than self-loathing.
