Of course race matters, Troll is the best PvE race.

As for raiding, spec fire :p

Seriously, fire is teh DPS.

But if you really want to go boring frost, all ya have to do is to press frostbolt, use your WE whenever it's up, use your Cooldowns well... And use your trinkets.

But frost is boring as hell.

I'm no mage, but deep fire is the PvE spec. I've yet to see a PvE mage that's specced frost (In TBC).

Oh there are some, and Frozen Shadoweave set is good for it. But it doesn't give as damage as fire build, and since it is pretty much what mage is good for in raids (except for waters ofc!), fire it goes.

However, in heroics, frost can be pretty cool, since the best kiter in the game is probably the frost mage. Or the hunter :p

Still, heroics need dps too.

Fire is the way to go mate.

Oh yeah, I rolled a mage too, so this helps. Thanks.

What yous guys are saying is fire for leveling and then...? I want to use my mage mainly to stealth farm a few bosses for rare drops and aoe farm cloth for my priest. Is there a suggested talent build for that sort of thing?

I did. Till 60, then I mucked around. BC came back out and i switched back to full frost. Hit 70, changed a buncha different specs.

Frost is the best (imo) to level. two "i cant die and my water elemental is killing the mob!" per 10minutes in grinding is godmode.

Fire does the most raw dps 850spelldmg +
Arcane does the most overall dps at 70 (arc/21fire).
Frost is the best to level with and PvP with.
Oh, and Frost Mages are a godsend for kiting elites and stuff. I can kill elites all day long with a frost mage, so long as they dont have a ranged attack or magic. You can do it with full arc (get slow) but it's a lot more of a hassle/costs a lot more mana.

61frost. With 41 in it you cant get Mind Mastery, which is one of the only reasons to go arcane (as a frost mage).

Both Frost Warding and Arctic Winds sucks. Don't take them. And Imp. Frostbolt is an absolute must. As well as Emp. Frostbolt, if you're going frost.

The build ranzo suggested is the best imo.

Anyway, for leveling, fire has the advantage of killing them before they reach you, but accidents may happen. Frost is good because it slows them down, so you can also kill them before they reach you.

Well, the best I'd suggest is that you go fire up untill level 45-50 (because that's when frost begins to be interesting), then go up to 70 as frost. Then you decide, since you had experience from both sides.

Arcane is interesting, but it's more of a support tree. It really doesn't give that much DPS.

--Edit--

Btw, you'll probably have the same doubt I had. When the +dmg items start appearing, don't hesitate to take them. +dmg is truly what gives mages power, screw it if you get less mana.

Do you have any general advice on leveling? It seems like I'm either low on mana from casting or low on health from trying to melee so I can regen my mana all the time. The free food is nice, but I spend too much time eating and drinking.

What level are you? You should buy a Greater Magic Wand (There's always plenty on the AH) at level 13. They're hax at that level and hit for a ****ton.

You'll need to wand a lot when you first start. Around 20 is when you'll stop wanding all the time and start casting all the time. I think I used to sit and drink/eat every three or four mobs at the bgining, but I've got it down to where I can go for about 20 -30 mobs before I have to eat/drink now.
