Ok so I just reformated my computer, and figured Diablo would work fine, since I just reformatted...So I borrowed my friends copy of LOD since I lost mine, then I proceded with the instalation...It went all good, I connected to east, checked if my account was still active, everything was ok from there. It being my friends disc, I need a loader, so I installed a loader that wouldnt work. So I decided to say f'it to the loader, and then just tried to use the disc. When I got to the start page, instead of where US East/West etc... was it was, FSGS, Battle.net, Lan Party, or Lan Privado...so i figured they must of changed it or something. I tried connecting to the server that said only battle.net, but I got stuck on connecting to fastest server which then lead to an error message. I said to myself, some loader stuff must be installed, I just need to filter it out, then it will go back to US East/West, and all the other stuff. So sure enough there was still a bunch of crap that had to do with the loader I installed, and so I deleted it all, and tried again... Same thing.

I've reformated my computer, turned off all form of firewalls/protection, reinstalled probably about 12 times, and still nothing happened. Im wondering if its my internet, but how would I be able to right you this message with bad internet?
Please help me,
Mitchell Graham

p.s I also tried connecting the FSGS, but alas, no dice
I just recieved this PM, and so, I wonder what's wrong with his D2. Now, he reformatted, which means that anything thats bad would have to have been erased completely, right? If thats the case, I'm thinking it might be your CD? I don't really know what to do about these kinds of probklems, but to test your CD, try to install it on a friends computer, somewhere else. See if that still gives you the same error.

How can he fix this problem, guys? :)

Diablo will still use same registry settings..
You need to go in and edit it manually, add back U.S. East and everything.

I'm not sure how..you'd add it in the reigstery but that area is tricky part of your computer, deleting the wrong thing could mress up so much. :-/

Did you try installing at someone elses house with different CD's and on their computer? It muight just be straight up computer problems, who knows. Now that I think about it, what kind of graphics card do you have?

A) If he reformatted THEN reinstalled Diablo and put some loader in then the loader prolly hosed him.

Try going into regedit and press ALT+F opens the find dialog. Type in Battle.net or gateways into the box, or maybe USEAST. That should find the correct registry section. Compare yours to a known working one *ie mine*

Screenshot

If all looks good its likely that your windows hosts file has been tampered with, you can check this by going to c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and opening the file called hosts (if you don't see it turn on show hidden/system files.) Open the file using notepad and look for any entries that might resemble battle.net, if they were more clever and used the IP you would have to look up the servers addy to see if it was hijacked. Since this is a fresh install there really is no reason for ANYTHING to be redirected inside the host file. You can SAFELY delete the file totally and it won't hurt anything.

What this file does is override the DNS (domain name resolution) from your ISP, its a nifty way to not see content from certian webpages. Ie if you didn't ever want to see an ad from say media.fastclick.net again you could add an entry to redirect it to some bogus IP address. You would still get a X in the site but not see the ad.

*Note* This is also a very common place for browser/search engine hijackers to take over your browser (if your still a IE sucker) So if you're getting webpages you dont think you should be try checking here.
