Just starting Diablo 2 ... questions

I have seen a few guides and have tried a paladin and a sorc char (both to about level 10 or so).

I do not have any equipment that the guides talk about so I am finding it hard to advance (still in Single Player, Normal - Act I). So, I seem to be getting weaker as I am just using Melee (normal attack), to fight. I have 1 point into Might, and have that always on, in the right side attack slot.

Thinking about starting over, but wondered if I should be doing something different. Or, am I just playing these char's wrong ...

I have tried a Hammerdin Pally, but he will not get the 'Blessed Hammer' skill until lvl 18 (and guides say that it will not be effective until about lvl 30). Now, at lvl 12, I am using a scepter with 6-11 dmg, and a shield with 35% blocking. Not good, but all I can find and use with only 30 str. As stated earlier, I use Melee attack with the Might always on. Is this how low level pally's start?

Also, I tried a Meterorb Sorceress, but will not get Meteor skill until lvl 24. For this char, at about lvl 10 now, I use fire bolt as my main attack, and ice blast in the right slot, but it is only lvl 2 now, and my fire bolt is lvl 7, I think, as I put most skill points in fire bolt. The fire bolt works good, but takes tons of mana. So, this is a big problem if I run into any groups of more than 3 or 4 at a time (I quickly run out of mana/rejuv potions).

I thought about trying a Barb, as I had a good one in Diablo, and figured that would be the easiest to play (... Melee, Melee, Melee.. right?), but after creating one and playing to lvl 5, I figured that the ranged attacked creatures would be killers and would only get worse, so I gave up on that (maybe try that later, if I find a good guide, or good equip).

The problem I have with guides is that many say max 4 skills, but that is 80 points, so how do you start with just a few points? Do you put points in all 4 evenly? or pick 1 and max it first? or how is this done? And, what attack do you use before you can use your main skill?

I guess the last paragragh is really my only question ... are there any guides on how to play the low levels with just average equip and in single player Classic mode? Any links or help would be greatly appreciated....

equipment

I guess I didn't ask my question very well. I don't care about equipment.

I just wanted to know how to play the first few levels... what skill to use as primary and what skill to use as secondary while I play until I can get enough skill points to get a 'magic' skill ... like blessed hammer, or zeal, for the pally, or chain lightning or meteor for the sorc.

In other words, are there any guides for the low levels that explain how to play (single player, as I don't want to be helped to level).

I played Diablo for years, but just got Diablo 2 Classic for Chrismas, so this is all new to me. I just want a char that I can see get stronger as I go.

Thanks...

Try playing it online and in parties. MUCH MUCH MUCH faster than single player.

Well, at the top of this forum is a sticky guide that has some great char build guides. My suggestion is to go through them and find one that you like and follow the guide to completion.

As for your early skill points...Don't use them unless it makes sense to your build. Many new gamers to D2 end up using these skill points as they level up; which you don't have to do, you can horde the points and use them for whatever skills you need to master.

If your serious about D2, then get the LoD expansion and create a magic find [MF] char [usually a sorc] and use this char to find items to use or trade with. Then you could transfer these items to other chars as you build them.

thanks for the help

Thx, ZConner for the advice. I have found a few guides that I am trying, but they do not tell you how to play at low levels.. For example, they say max zeal, sacrifice, resist cold, holy freeze (for example). Thats 80 points. What do I do when I only have say, 8 points?

Do I put all 8 points in zeal? (After my 1 point in all pre-reqs) ...
Or, do I put 2 in each of the 4 skills? ...
And, how do you play until level 12 or 18 when you get your attack skill? ...
Do you use any auras at low levels?

These are the questions I have, but I am slowly trying diferent combinations on my own, since I have not found any guides that talk about this.

Thanks for the advice.

I think your too excited about placing your skill points. Saving them for the best skills will make or break your char.

My suggestion is to choose one char type and simply follow the strat guide. Don't waste your skill points on skills that you wont use later on just to make the early part fo the game easier. Take your time, find a good group to fight with, level quicker, and save the points to later on.

EDIT: Which online server do you play, East/West? Tell us what char type you want to create also, then we can make it easier for you to understand the character progression.

Sorry for the delay, I was on vacation for a few says.

I was playing on US East, but have decided to play in single player for a bit to experiment. Thanks for the help. I am trying the zeal pally that is in one of the guides.

I WOULD recommend to play sp first. WITHOUT any guides at all. There is nothing better then your own experience when it comes to custom chars. You will not be able to create a char fitting your style without knowing all the skill's pros and cons.

Sure your first chars will be screwed up as hell but that's the fun about it ^^.

Seriously, most of the guides are for people who do own at least 75% of the equipment and have enough to trade for the rest or alternatives.

Just play around with the game a little and have fun :)

Instead of being a kind of meteor, u should try being a kind of person with frozen orb, but i only recommend u on frozen orb if you play b.net. U lv up faster. just train up to lv 25 somehow and then from there do baal runs. but remember to invest most skill points into ice bolt. put 1 point into teleki... and 1 point into teleport. Just make sure that u lv up icebolt to atleast 5. and save the skill point in lv 29 ave when u gain to lv 30, put 1 point into each cold mastery and frozen orb.
