ok, u can delete this thread if it's been said or not, but at least tell me where the link to it is, Since i'm new to this forum. My problem is in starcraft, everytime i try creating a game from bnet ppl can't seem to get in due to the high latency bug i have. I've found a few posts from different sites b4 and i've done it but i won't work.(such as, turn off sound, music, running programs, use ad aware). But nothing seems to fix it. I was wonderin how u fix this then... I've also got 2 comps networking, so that may be the problem, help me out..thanks =p

The two comps running off the same connection probly is the problem. Once upon a time I did the same thing, and tried to play online......cept I crashed constantly and couldn't connect and such. Try disconnecting the other comp and rebooting, at least while you are on b.net.

Also, let us know what types of comps you have, and how they're connected. Are you using CAT5 cables, a hub, or a switch? Hubs always reduce your connection speed if you have two or more computers connected to it.

Lastly your connection type and provider make a huge difference.

If you're even using AOL DSL service, you'll still lag. The AIM.exe file was ranked as one of the laggiest pieces of software the casual user will ever use. It's a pain in the ass to have to work around with it hogging up taskbar and system tray space.

If you're using any type of AOL, that's your problem. If you're on dialup and your friends are on DSL, the latency difference is too great for them to join, try letting them make the game.

If you could just tell me the following information, I could try to figure out your problem for ya :)

Computer Brand:
CPU (Brand and speed):
Amount of RAM:
Hard Drive Used Space/Total Space:
Connection Type:
Operating System:
Typical Programs Running While on StarCraft:

If you're unsure of any of those categories, I've provided a sample of my setup below...

Computer Brand: Hewlett Packard Pavilion ze5000s Laptop
CPU (Brand and speed): Intel Pentium 4; 1.8gHz
Amount of RAM: 512MB
Hard Drive Used Space/Total Space: 8.4GB/40GB
Connection Type: Verizon Online DSL connected to 10/100 Etherfast Ethernet NIC
Operating System: Windows XP Pro
Typical Programs Running While on StarCraft: UltimateBot, BG3, Winamp, AIM, LeapFTP, BlackICE

Kazaa is a major factor in game lag as well. If you have that open, make sure you close it in your System Tray (it's a blue and yellow icon on the right-hand side of your taskbar) by right-clicking on it, and going to "Close Kazaa Media Desktop". Simply hitting the 'X' button at the top right of the Kazaa window does not close it, or the active connections. Many people make that mistake.

Oh, and if you have a router Blizzard does not support that 'tis you can't create any games. Unless thet router is disconnected is 'til you can't create any new games ^^.

AOL does not lag if you have at least a 700mhz computer. Definently not with a p4 running 56k you will almost never lag unless you are running another program that is DOWNLOADING stuff. You could have 50 programs running and it wouldn't affect it with P4. Another thing that lots of people don't realize is with Windows XP if you have 56k and you have it automatically download updates your connection will be as slow as a turtle.

This is true, however yes, there are still many people out there (ahem, me) that have at least one computer predating the Pentium 3. Mine being an AMD K6-2 processor (400mHz MMX!!! lol)

Hence the reason I asked what other programs he was running. I have DSL and I can still lag if I'm creating too much network traffic.

Yeah, I disabled that feature ASAP.

I'm using a NetGear Router, and I opened up ports 4000 and 6112. This allows me to share upline in games.

But this may not work with some routers I am told.

Make sure the other PC you are networked to has unneccessary applications shut down also.
Something else to always consider, if you are dialup, you may be slower than 24K.
You get that slow, or slower, and few can enter a game with you.
Do a speed test at ....
http://computingcentral.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp
and see what you are actually doing.
If you are on DSL, or cable try this address, for a tweak test...
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
It will give you a good idea on how to make improvements, if any can be made.
More important than speed, that most don't realize, is ping time.
We used to be on a satellite connection, cable speeds without the cable, but lousy ping, somewhere around 800.
Anything above I think 400 is 6R in the games.
The dslreports address also gives a ping test.
Let us know if any of this helps, or if you move to a better connection.
