the storyline of the end of diablo II LoD seems to foreshadow strange and unexpected things. After working your ass off to save the universe and the precious worldstone, you essentially fail, and tyreal claims the worldstone needs destroying.
The people of Haggorath are surprised, atma says "this was not foretold in the prophecy".
I think this is foreshadowing. Tyreal will be the final boss of diablo III. He is the one currupted by the power of baal. After all, we know angels have fallen to the dark before, we had to go after and kill izual. As the paladin says after you kill him "how can one who was once so holy, fall so far from the light"
that's my sensless, baseless rumor-start.
