It's unacceptable what he did. Canada and USA are at peace with each other and having the director of communications or any employee of the Canada government publically bash or critisize a US leader shouldn't be tolorated. It can lead to unfriendly terms. The same would happen if someone from the Bush administration publically insulted or critisized our prime minister.

That and the article states that the conversation was private, and other reporters overheard it.

Diana wasn't enough... noo. ****ing press. As great as it is that they're unrestrained by the government (or that's at least what we're lead to believe), they can be way too obtrusive at times. What if you had some government position, and some reporter happened to overhear you talking to one of your friends about your boss? Right... if you're high up enough, you're ****ed.

Seems like the press invades people's privacy and personal life way too often.

That's bull. You can't blame the reporters for overhearing stuff. Government officials need to be careful about what they say and where they say it. That's what politics is all about, knowing how to handle the media. They knew what they were getting into when they decided to go into politics... the media will get any dirt they can and run with it for miles. He shouldn't have said that stuff about bush anyways, but if he had said it in private then no one would have ever known and therefore no one would have cared. But as soon as it came out in the open, he was toast. If our prime minister had kept him on staff after saying that stuff, then it would be like saying he supported him and even more so, that he though bush was an idiot too (which he probably does).
