Yeah, you need to know what size fits your mobo, the pin number, like what I am getting for my new computer build is 240 pin. Also if you have one of those half-assed motherboards there might be compatibility issues even if the size is right, whats your mobo brand and name?

Look up mobo specs online, get the mobo designation from dell by looking at your computer specs on they website. Also look to see what DDR2 your mobo supports, if it doesn't support the newer 800 than get 667 (I think thats the number) or whatever it actually supports. Problem with moding pre-build PCs is that they are build to be as unfit for moding as possible, dell doesn't want you to upgrade your RAM, dell wants you to get a new PC from them with more RAM.
Years back I installed a GeForce FX 5200 on my Dell, the thing crashed like a mother****er for about a year it'd work for a month and then Id have to reformat the harddrive and create a new partition...that was tiring, now it works fine for some reason (even though I don't use it to play games, maybe thats why) oh well.

Easy solution, go to any store that sells dell, or just go to the nearest mall (the good one not the bad one) there will always be atleast one dell stand over there. The dell guy will tell you all you need to know and stuff you don't need to know and don't want to know and thats then you punch him in the face (or kick em in the balls whichever you prefer) and walk off (or run away) in any case that way you won't have to worry about compatibility, they'll tell you what you need to buy just tell them the model of your dell.

Specs will be online. Pin number will be online too. Front side bus is something you should know, and if the current ram you have has slow timing, don't buy ram with ultra fast timing, it works at the lowest speed ram you have. There is ddr 3200, 4000 etc. get the right type
