Perhaps you should elaborate on what exactly you want this laptop to be used for first?

I have a Dell XPS M1330 that works pretty well out of the box. Just make sure you get XP not Vista, I've seen them run Vista (it's slow as hell). Good size for portability with a 13.1 inch screen, decent keyboard, trackpad instead of that stupid little button in the middle of the keyboard, ~4 hours of battery life after a year of use, etc.

If you're not concered about price, go for an ASUS, or have it custom built.

If you're interested in gaming, i'd go for an xps, they're top of the line but less pricey than a custom built machine.

Always, always, always get xp as the default OS though.

I'd also be sure to get the XP machine soon because it goes off the shelves soon (if it already hasn't), just because Microsoft is big on shoving that sandpaper Johnson down our unwilling throats.

online stores will be selling copies until they run out though. at my shop weve gathered a list of sites selling windows XP, the smallest one on our list has over 20k copies left, so he should be good as long as he plans to buy int he next year (granted, he'll have to hunt a bit more than normal)

ontop of that, Warez > pulling from store shelfs :)

True, it's not as if pirated versions of Windows are hard to get updates for. I mean Microsoft even fails hard at protecting their own software from pirated copies.

Vista has the unfortunate distinction of being made by microsoft.

I've had Vista for little less than a year now, and it has never once : Froze, Crashed, Deleted anything, Caused me any problems.

I booted up my XP machine once to get some stuff off it, and it did quite the opposite of Vista, being it crashed unceremoniously costing me a good hour of lost progress.

Vista is just hated on by stupids and MAc people because neither can figure out how to get off their high horse and actually use it without listening to what other people say about it.
