Most people who use the Internet tend to share a common, liberal culture. They tend to vote democrat, be pro-choice, athéist and believe in moral relativism. Those of you who have been to many different forums and many different serious discution topics know what I mean by that, and I think this phenomenon is undeniable.
But why is that ? Is it because the massive contact with different peoples, ideas, opinions and culture tend to open your mind and corrode many of your stéréotype ? Or is it simply because most people in southern USA wont have access to the Internet before another decade ?

I wonder...

I think it's for one of two reasons: 1. What B~E said, that exploring the internet opens your mind to new viewpoints, or 2. People who are more accepting in general tend to use the internet to seek out different viewpoints. The first one is probably more likely; you just get more exposure.

its because the younger generation is incredibly more involved with computers and the internet, and youthful peoples are statistically much more liberal.

as they say, wisdom comes with age, right?

I tend to disagree. On most of the forums I go to, they're probably only slightly more liberal. About 60-40. It's just I find most liberals have MUCH stronger opinions, and tend to express them more. But I do agree with you that discussing things on the internet tends to make you more open to other's views.

Not to mention that the internet is mostly young people, who usually vote democratic, and have more liberal ideas.

This forum doesn't count, cuz it's 90% idiot.

Well if younger people truly tend to be democrat, I guess it pretty much answer my question which started this topic.
Which naturaly lead to the following question, which his the question that this topic should have been based on in the first place : why then are young people liberal ? Inexperience, or because conservatism is simply "wrong" in the modern world. Because, if an ideology is not popular whitin the new cohort of young people, the supporter of said idéology might whant to ask some serious questions about the relevence of their belief in today's world..

i believe part of it is actually the natural tendency of the youth to rebell against their elders, and due to their relative inexperience in life, they are more likely to make impulsive and liberal(note: liberal, not left-wing) decisions than their older counterparts. now this is not an absolute division, but merely a weak paradigm to temporarily explain the phenomenon.

fortunately for both sides of the coin, the [democratic] world is ruled mainly by middle-aged people. i would imagine that if the youth are liberal, and if they age to become more conservative(generally speaking, of course), the people inbetween youth and geriatricy would balance out the spectrum.

"If you aren't a liberal by the time you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain."
