Apparently there are still people out there who play Diablo I on a regular basis. Does anywhere here honestly still play it?

You're telling me. But when I go to channels originally for Diablo 1 I still see people using it (such as "Town Square").

There is no economy in Diablo I, never was one. It's all about who has the most hacked up items.

Diablo i is the people who cant afford the 20$ for diablo II

It's mostly for people that like to chat. Probably about 90% of all Diablo I clients on are not clients but chat bots restricted to those channels. If you actually go on Diablo I you will see that there's not many people playing to many games on it.

Why not just pay ten dollars and get starcraft so you can actually go to non public channels?

Yeah, I played it when it came out and about a year after that, but now that I've played Diablo II and the expansion since they came out, going back to Diablo just ends up making me bored after a few minutes.
