So I am installing windows xp on my computer. Everything worked fine and went well until I try to start it up for the first time. I see the windows xp loading screen with the bar and the green things sliding across it, and after that all I get is a black screen, I thought it might be loading so I left it and 1/2 an hour later it is still there. So I hit reset and the usual thing for windows not loading comes up asking if you want safe mode so I go into safe mode and it works fine. I try to boot up normally and every time I get a black screen. Has anyone else has this problem / know what it might be?

Right now I am back on windows 98, that is how I posted.

I can't remember, but on the screen before the blue bar loading and Windows XP logo, hit F8 or F10 (I can't remember) and start up in Safe Mode.

Your drivers are screwed up. Download the latest versions, save somewhere and install them after installing Windows XP.

Reinstall didn't work it still messes up. If it is the drivers I have cd's, should I boot into safe mode and install them from there? Do you know what drivers it could be, might take a while to install everything.

No, I was thinking about the cd's because I reformat before installing, so the default windows xp drivers for some of the hardware might not be working right, and installing from cd might help.

Then you have to do it in Safe Mode.

For the rest of you: If Windows complains of not finishing loading, it is often driver related or you turned the power off in the middle of DOS-Windows mode. :D

Notice you said load on Safe Mode. No internet, no ability to install. :( But it is definitely a video driver/card problem..

Download somewhere else and install.

Or do Step-by-Step (does it exist in XP?) and say no to all drivers except one of them, I think it was ndis.vxd, which will allow you to use your modem drivers.

[edit] It is ndis.vxd for network adapters.

You should get an copy of OS 9, start it up from cd and run norton utilities. This will iron out any bugs in your OS.

Hope this helps!
