For some odd reason, lately I got more into music and ran out of good bands to buy CDs from in actual stores. So now I resort to independent artists, artists who are not signed and produce their CDs themselves.
It's quite a bitch to go through the MASS of artists available and some of it is shit obviously. With more popular bands you don't really run the risk of buying plain shit since the artist actually managed to get a contract, but there's some bands that might fit your liking in music more than anything you can find in your local shop.
As I'm from Germany, most of the Indy stuff here is with German vocals which is pretty gay, so basically I'm now in the process of selecting good CDs that I will have shipped over from the USA.
Best place to start with all this is www.cdbaby.com . I don't know how the hell they manage to do it, but they have like a fat review for every CD they offer because they listen to each piece an artists sends them. You can browse by mood, instruments, style, hell even by cover picture, it's unbelievable. Usually you can listen to 2 minutes of most songs from each CD in good MP3 quality.
Some good stuff I found should not be hidden from you:
The Anix: www.theanix.com
Unjust: www.unjust.com
The Revolution Smile: www.therevolutionsmile.com
H is Orange: www.hisorange.com
Dualesc: www.dualesc.com
Those are all kickass bands. I'll continue searching for a while since shipping is 10$ and I don't want to pay it twice just because I forgot a CD... if you find something worthwhile too, you might as well post it here.
Anyone generally listen to indy music..?
It also let's you search for independent bands with a style similar to an actual popular band: http://www.cdbaby.com/found?allsearch=sdfsdf&allsearchsubmit=Search
