Ignore defense in duels?

Ok...I need someone to clarify this for me. does grief, and Last wish, and hand of justice and so on...can they ignore targets defense in duels?... No I'm not a newb but some people say it works...some say it doesn't. WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

Question: I found a four socket polearm and put 4 eth's (I think) into it, and it had -100% to enemy defense. Isn't this the exact same thing?
