How useful are Set Items?

Is it too newb of me to try and gun down Set Items? Not the Sigon stuff I can't get my hands on, but lesser sets Like Angelic Raiment or Cleglaw's Brace. I already have the full set of Cleglaw's Brace, and intend to give it to my new character to use. I also have an Angelic Mantle, 1 of 4 pieces to the Angelic Raiment set. Is it a waste of time to try to get full sets that aren't unique? I thought it would be nice to get the Angelic Halo and Angelic Wings to make a partial set, so I can have those bonuses and still use the full Cleglaw's Brace. I want to know how useful Set Items are, both in gameplay and in trading. And since I don't really have good items to trade for better ones, I've been crafting P Gems like crazy for trading. How do I protect myself from trading gems for hacked items? I haven't encountered this experience yet, but I want to protect myself hacked items that disappear over time. Also, where can I get Sigon stuff? Which monsters drop it most often? And before you let me know, factor in that I'm still in normal difficulty and never faced of against Duriel. Let me know your suggestions.

yeah p gems arnt really worth anything anymore..and sigs u can prolly get for real cheap..except for shield..as for ceglaws..its good for a lld zealot but not mch emse and ajleics goot for lld zealot too...only qanjjelics rings/ammulet combo worth nething really as they ass a ton of attack rating..thats baout it..ive seaid that a lot havent i? well thats about it for me

death set gloves and belt are very useful. u'll even see them in high lvl duels sometimes. if i were u i'd hold on to any death set gloves and belts u find. also worth something to anyone who lld's

for low lvls, most sets are awesome, exception for SOME of the weapons in which suck bad

It's a toss up between using set items or uniques.

I have collected most of the sets and use them on new chars to get them to level faster by whipping through the quests but when you get to hell, I feel that the uniques give a better chance to succeed.

I like these sets of the lower ones:

Cleglaws - Mostly for the Pally
Sigons
Artic - Helps a lot for the young zons
Milabregas
Deaths

Sets are great. While not offering all the + to skills and resistances of runeword gear, or special abilities, you do get to glow with the higher level sets. Lower level sets can save your life. A good example is a paladin using Sigons Full Set and Civerbs Mace. Civerbs Mace does a lot of damage, and with Zeal and Mana Leech you can put some pain on things to about act3 or so. Some sets suck, but others are really great. My favorite set is M'avinas.

Sets kick ass specially the low-mid level ones, but there arent enough usefull full sets around such as tals,and ik.

but might i say... best low lvl stuff are among items like:

sig gloves/boots, im poor, and ive never taken these off my zon.
clegs ^^ o yea... always fun
angelic set (armor, 2 rings, and ammy). good life, nice AR, even +1 to all skill and 75 to life ^^ guess what else my zon wears?

Normal Meph gives a lot of sigons. Since you are still getting used to the game just keep any set pieces you find (wear them if you need them). Once you start getting good uniques, only use the sets for new characters. Generally sets don't work well past normal, with the exception of most class specific sets, which can be pretty good.

I love sets, often times the work better than Uniques. Sometimes Sets can be better than any Unique Assortment.
