How do i add mods?

I dont understand this "backup" files and im trying to add the phunmod to my diablo,cant someone giva me an easy description?

Usually mods are files called patch_d2.mpq

If you download that patch from the mod, make a backup of your original patch_D2.mpq in your diablo2 folder first. (Copy, and paste it somewhere else)

Then get the patch_d2.mpq from the mod you downloaded and paste it in the diablo2 folder.

just put it in ur normal d2 directory and play the game as u would
