My earlier column this week detailed the work of a volunteer team to assess problems with US temperature data used for climate modeling. One of these people is Steve McIntyre, who operates the site climateaudit.org. While inspecting historical temperature graphs, he noticed a strange discontinuity, or "jump" in many locations, all occurring around the time of January, 2000.

These graphs were created by NASA's Reto Ruedy and James Hansen (who shot to fame when he accused the administration of trying to censor his views on climate change). Hansen refused to provide McKintyre with the algorithm used to generate graph data, so McKintyre reverse-engineered it. The result appeared to be a Y2K bug in the handling of the raw data.

McKintyre notified the pair of the bug; Ruedy replied and acknowledged the problem as an "oversight" that would be fixed in the next data refresh.

NASA has now silently released corrected figures, and the changes are truly astounding. The warmest year on record is now 1934. 1998 (long trumpeted by the media as record-breaking) moves to second place. 1921 takes third. In fact, 5 of the 10 warmest years on record now all occur before World War II. Anthony Watts has put the new data in chart form, along with a more detailed summary of the events.

The effect of the correction on global temperatures is minor (some 1-2% less warming than originally thought), but the effect on the U.S. global warming propaganda machine could be huge.

Then again -- maybe not. I strongly suspect this story will receive little to no attention from the mainstream media.

I've never been a global warming fanatic, however my a good reason for wanting to take care of the environment is that no one can deny that all the stuff we're putting in the air is good for us (smog ftw). Plus there's always the national security and economic reasons why it's practical to move away from oil (minus coal for this line of thinking).

On a bright note, there was also the first request to have a nuclear power plant constructed in the USA for the first time in a very long time and expectations is that it will be a growing trend.

The story achieved no attention from the media, because it deserves none. What diffference does it make if the hottest day on record was in 1998 or 1934? Does it change the fact that this summer the Arctic Ice melted with a speed that brought down the prediction of total loss of the polar cups from 2040 to 2013??

Get to planting. It is scientifically proven that baby trees or whatever you want to call them take in more carbon dioxide than a tree thats 100 years old.

I would rather be safe then sorry...It's either take care of the problem and make this place a healthier/greener place to live or not. Now what happens if the people who say global warming doesn't exist are wrong? We lose. That's right! No more earth/human beings.

The snow here isnt as heavy as it used to be and the summers are even more unstable than what they were over here. Im not going to blaming people straight away but you cant deny something is happening, be it natural, or caused by what we're doing to the atmosphere..

carbon dioxide doesnt influence global temperatures but it wont hurt to stop polluting earth.

btw, it wont matter what we do, we are going to die soon anyway. im not being a pessimist.
