Engineer Hero Guide
Hey guys,
I decided to write this guide, because this is a guide I can never find. While engineer is an extremely powerful (probably OP) hero, there are few guides for him. I discovered how powerful engineer could be when I played against a very good one. Our whole team was 2 levels above the rest of their team except for engineer who was 4 levels above us at one point. I watched the video and basically copied the strategy, with a few minor personal tweaks.
This is my second guide and I don’t consider myself anywhere near pro. I’m open to suggestion to this guide, but If you decide this guide sucks, go make your own. Suprisingly, they take a long time to write.
Enjoy
Abilities
The Keg
Never going into battle without a full keg of Ale, the Engineer also knows that it can be used as a powerful explosive in a pinch. When heaved into a battle, it stuns and damages enemies where it lands. He drinks this stuff.
Action
Target Position
Type
Enemy Units And Trees
Type: Magic
Range: 1,000
Radius: 200
Cast Time: 1.0 Seconds
Mana Cost: 80 / 100 / 120 / 140
Cooldown: 11.0 Seconds
Required Level: 1 / 3 / 5 / 7
Activation
Throws a keg at target locatoin, impacting after a 1 second delay. Enemy units in radius take 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 Magic damage, are stunned for 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds, and are pushed 250 units away from the impact point.
If the Engineer is in the blast radius, he too will be knocked back, but won’t be stunned.
The Steam Turret, built piece by piece, is bonded to the Engineer himself. He is able to control it from anywhere and it gains any items the Engineer has when it’s created, yet dies if he does.
Steam Turret

Action
Target Position
Range: 400
Cast Time: 1.0 Seconds
Mana Cost: 100
Cooldown: 30.0 Seconds
Required Level: 1 / 3 / 5 / 7
Activation
Creates a Steam Turret at the target position that does 12 / 18 / 27 / 37 to 14 / 22 / 33 / 43 Physical Damage each shot in a three shot burst. Only the first attack in the burst may trigger on-attack events.
The turret has 500 / 550 / 600 / 650 range and has 7 / 10 / 13 / 16 mana. The turret takes 1 mana per attack. It takes 4 hits for Heroes and Bosses to kill the Turret, 8 hits from creeps.
All of the Engineer’s modifiers apply to the turret except for Life Steal. Damage from items is reduced by 80% and then added to the turret’s base damage. The turret is immune to all health and mana regen and cannot be placed within 100 units of a tree.
Tinker
The Engineer can easily manipulate the inner workings of any Mechanical unit or Tower, Tinkering with them to either increase or decrease their function while he continues to work on them.

Engineer Hero Skill Build
You may be asking why I don’t get energy field till level 8. Sometimes I get it at Level 7. However, I rarely get it at lvl 6. Here is my logic:
Engineer doesn’t have much mana at this point in the game. Unless you are fully mana’d up, you probably won’t be able to afford energy field (this early in the game you aren’t all usually healing and then pushing).
THe improvements to the tower are very helpful for both team fights and tower pushes.
I saw somebody else do this and copied of them. (not a great reason)
So do what you want, but I like delaying energy field.
Items
Initial Items
I tend to go one of the following. It also depend on whether or not you go middle or not. I like to be a team player and get the courrier sometimes and get the following:
Minor Totem * 3
Ground familiar
Runes of blight
Helath potion
Mana potion
Another option that helps you alchemist bones faster:
Gloves of haste
Health potion
I find this helps you get last hits and helps you get alchemist bones faster. In the beginning you want to get alchmeist bones asap!
Item Progression
Alchemist Bones
Enchanted Marchers
Charged Hammer
Portal Key
These items are your core build. Once you have these, you are officially ready to kick some ass. Get in a team fight and prepare to kill everything you see. I will explain gameplay later. Also the warpcleft is part of the charged hammer I just prefer to get that first.
I used to not get portal key, but the advantage of it, is it allows you to teleport in after that battle has started, ulti in an ideal location and put a turret down and throw a keg. However, this kind of combo requires a lot of mana, so I don’t tend to get it until after I get Charged Hammer
After this I tend to get one of these:
Brutalizer
Savage Mace
I pretty much always get the brutalizer. My logic is that even though engineer is ranged, I find if you when you are using turret and if you have this, if you get one stun off, in that time the turret can sometimes take 3/4 of a heroes’s health. It’s ridiculous! However Savage Mace I think would be nice too because of the ministuns and bonus damage.
Luxury/Situation Items/ Other stuff I’ve seen
Nullfire Blade
Daemonic Breastplate
Behemoth’s heaert
Frostburn
Nullfire is a must against certain heroes. For example I played a team with an ophelia and a hellbringer once and I would alchemist bones one of ophelia’s creeps and nullfire the demon. That’s 450 gold right there plus it kills their stuff!!!
Gameplay
Laning and starting
After you buy your initial items, go immediately to the river near the where the runes are. Put a turret up on one of the cliffs. This serves for either you or your team mate as a ward.
Laning is pretty straight forward for engineer. Harass their heroes will denying and getting creep kills.
As soon as you get alchemist bones (get this as soon as possible!) start using it to kill creeps or use it on artierly. This item increasing your income throughout the game so much. Even if your team sucks, and you’re having a bad game yourself, you can usually get decent equipment.
Ganking
Ganking with this hero is a lot of fun. you want to use the keg to stun. Also, something to note is with the Keg is that it pushes units back, so if you want to push the hero away from their tower, you throw the keg on the side of the hero close to the tower. This pushes him back and stuns him. Now you go into action. You put up your steam turret and cast tinker on it and try to kill him. In addition you can use energy field if you have enough mana.
Pushing
Engineer, in my opionion, is probably the Best Pusher in the Game! He can sometimes easily take down a tower at lvl 5 if no one else is guarding it. Here’s how
Place the tower right in front of the tower. Get it there before the creeps get there and don’t get in range of the tower yourself. Then cast tinker on it and tell it to attack all units (not just heroes). You can do this quickly by clicking the tower and pressing W. The Tower will attack the turret and because of tinker the turret will heal just as fast as the tower damages it. This essentially makes their tower do no damage!. This is ridiculous OP at times. Because of this, as soon as you get lvl 5 or 6. Start going into other lanes and pushing. Usually with three heroes, you can take down the tower before the other heroes can get help.
Team Fights
Try not to get attacked first in a team fight. Once the fight starts, put up your turret and tinker it, drop a keg. When you can get a few heroes around you drop your energy shield. This technique deals damage to all the hereos in that energy shield. If they try to get out, Use your Keg to Knock them back in. This is difficult, but if you can get good at it, it is very effective.
Defending
Engineer is not only a great pusher, but a great lane defender. Before the team engages a push, put down your turret near the tower and cast tinker on it. When they push your tower will help, but they will often kill it. However, if you put down your turret early enough, you can often put down another one right away!
Kongor
Engineer is really good for taking down kongor. He isn’t great at killing himself, but by putting his turret on the ledge near the middle, you can both know when your enemy is coming, and deal a lot of damage to him.
Hey guys this is my second guide so don’t be too rough on me. However, if there’s something you think I should add, please let me know and I will add it. Also, if you have any heroes that engineer works well with, work poorly with, is got at killing etc. let me know. Thank you!
Also, I have this guide on my site. Here's a link to my Engineer Hero Build and Guide
