Ok, I'm planning on going back to college this fall. After looking through a list of majors I've decided that honestly it's too ridiculous trying to figure out what it is I want to do in life. Every major I came across that I'd be interested in persuing in order to get a related career..I've come up with reasons against each and every one of them.
Personally there isn't a whole lot that interests me. I'm a very bland person, and I wish it were different, but I simply don't find a whole lot of the careers out there very much ideal at all.
That being said the majors that I've even slightly considered are as follows:
[BIOLOGY / NATURAL RESOURCES]
- Animal Behavior/Ethology
- Wildlife/Wilderness Management and/or Conservation
- Wildlife Biology
- Zoology
[TECHNOLOGY]
- Computer Graphics
- Web Design/Management
[OTHER]
- Japanese / Asian Studies
- Criminal Justice
Now let me break down each of them and show you the negatives about each.
Biology / Natural Resources:
I'm in avid support of one of these majors. They interest me in every way. There is only one problem with them, though. Math. I'm bad at math, simply put. I have even gotten to the point where I don't recall anything I learned in any of my math classes in high school. I mean I can do obvious basic math and even SLIGHT algebra, but more or less I'm pretty much lax in that sense.
Thus, my problem. Most every science major / field requires at least some math. Which otherwise means I need to take a certain amount of math courses in college as well as know what the **** I'm doing with math once in the field. I don't know what to do about this. I know it's no biggy to just get through the classes and eventually barely use it in the field, but the problem is I have a high belief that if I were to take said classes that I'd fail them, thus not earning the credits I need to proceed with my degree.
I've been debating back and forth on what to do about this. I've considered maybe getting a college tutor (most offer them for free), but I don't know how much that would help. Bleh..any suggestions as far as this goes would be awesome.
Now..moving on.
Technology:
I'm not completely tech savvy. I know a thing or two, but not much. Reason being..I'm not interested in much of it. This is why the only two tech fields I've considered were computer graphics and web design. They're the only thing I've ever really dabbled in. Now, onto the negatives about these majors.
The biggest negative would have to be that with the shear amount of people in this field, and the low availability for jobs makes the whole thing feel like a waste of time and money college wise. Not only that, but to get in the more appealing lines of work with these you have to be exceptional in your field. Something that I'll never achieve as I've never been good at much anything.
Needless to say I've strayed from these fields quite a bit. If anyone knows anything about this or can prove me wrong with solid proof then I'm all ears. I'd love to just sit at a computer all day for work, as sad as that is.
And lastly we have what I classifed as Other.
For starters.. Asian Studies / Japanese. These two sort of go hand in hand, so I'd more likely major in one and minor in the other. The only problem with this is that there are very few jobs that fit with these majors, and as I've read, most people in these majors end up going into some form of business career. Not something I'm interested in..not in the slightest. I'd love to go to Japan, work there, live there, but what honestly can I do there? I feel this one is more of a dreaming thing than anything.
Now the very last consideration was Criminal Justice.
In criminal justice the largest problem would come down to the shear amount of time, dedication, skill, etc. it would take to get into the only interesting fields of this major..ie; FBI, CIA, SWAT, etc. I know, I feel as though movies have influenced this on me, but the shit that they do is still sweet even if toned down a bit in the real world. But honestly I don't want to be a security guard, a cop, or whatever other lame lines of work come along with entry level criminal justice.
Now I know this was a lengthy post, and I know that the majority of you either didn't read it, skimmed it and moved to a different thread, or are just going to flame like idiots in here. That being said I only expect to read replies from people I know will post with great responses. Some of you are capable, and that's why I posted here.
Thanks a lot for any help. ^^;
Edit:
In the end I chose to apply for wildlife management. Please, if you can, someone help me figure out a way to tackle math courses when I feel I will fail every one of them. Also, I left the other options in the original post for any insight any of you may have. Just incase I don't get accepted to this college. =P
