Help (Hiragana)

I'm learning Japanese, and I'm in Japanese I and I need help. I've never fully learned a new language especially one that uses an entirely different writing system or alphabet.

I need any tips at learning this stuff cause right now it's killing me (and my memory is terrible). So far I've been writing each set that we're giving multiple times once a day, but it's just not sticking.. We have a quiz where we have to use what we learned to write the words displayed every two days (What we're given monday is to be quizzed Wed) so naturally I need to absorb as much and nail it into my head fast and hard.

Any help is appreciated. Douchebags will be verbally harassed.

Would using flashcards help? Have you tried going to JapanesePod101? I haven't started on learning the writing yet, but so far, I'm doing okay with the newbie audio stuff they've got. Doing things bit by bit helps too rather than rush into things.

What I also find works for me (at least when I was memorizing maths formulae) is to keep a pocket sized notebook with important things that I need to remember on it, and pulled it out to review whenever I was idling, like whenever I was waiting for the bus or something and repeating aurally made things stuck longer in the long run. Maybe you might want to try that for the kana?

I thought about flash cards and such, but it's not so much a problem of seeing something and saying, "Oh that's a/e/i/u/o or sa/se/so/etc."

I can see it and recognize pretty well its just seeing romaji and having to write it in kana is killing me. So far I'm writing the letters over and over and saying it each time, but it's only mildly sticking and usually the easy ones.

Though I suppose constantly seeing it might help too.

From my own experience the best way to learn languages is just to immerse yourself in it. Its just one of those things that eventually 'clicks' and things become much easier to understand. Listen to it, a podcast would be great, read it, write it. Its all mundane and really boring shit but it will seep into your brain eventually :p

Hmm...have you tried rewriting song lyrics? I haven't personally tried it yet, but I've heard friends picking their favourite Japanese songs, checking them out in romaji, then rewriting the whole thing in kana and checking the answers online. That way, you could learn the lyrics of a song (properly, without the gibberish), revise and test yourself on the kana, with the possibility of learning new Japanese terms and meanings at the same time.

Give that a idea a try and see how that goes. I would assume you like a few Japanese artists?

You can try this:

Study with someone else but instead of you both saying the words, make your partner say the answer and you give the question.

Like in my french class we have to quiz each other and i go:

What does Nager mean?

Partner goes and says it means to swim.

But never make your partner ask the questions to you.

Do that over and over for your set of words.

It works for me at least.
