Well, you should read the FAQ before posting.

From the Map Making Frequently Asked Questions
Switches are like a light switch, they can be on, or off (set or cleared) they act as a checking system, they can also be randomized by the computer. Switches always start cleared in maps.

In a map, switches can help you 'remember' if someone has been to a certain location.
Hope I've answered your question after at least 5 edits :D

I'm a newby to tip. But I think I know what they're for. Like X-traT(OD) said, yes, they are to trigger a different event on the map. For example, you bring a unit to a specific location and switch 1 is set, something different then the event before happens. Whoever uses RPG Maker knows what I am talking about.

Zornor that FAQ on switches is compleatly useless to someone who doesn't know them. I seriously doubt some one who didn't figure them out on there own will be helped by that.

Nothing againsed you its just a very poorly written exclamation. I never compair switches to light switch unless im trying to be a smartass.

SWITCH

A switch is a simple on/off variable. Using switches allows you keep track of which triggers have been used or to keep a trigger from activating several times simultaneously if multiple players meet the conditions at the same time.

SWITCH IS SET

This allows you to test whether a specific switch is in the ‘Set’ state or the ‘Cleared’ state.

Yes, i was a little not willing to use switchs for the longest of time but here is an example of whan i did. look under Runners and find the trigger that has to do with ghost dead set and clear its kindda like you have to have things set up(if it wasnt for the switch you would loss when your ghost died)
