DETROIT (AP) - Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek refused to accept about $3 million of his salary for a simple reason.

"I didn't feel that I could play," he said Saturday.

Hasek spoke before Detroit played Dallas, one day after general manager Ken Holland said Hasek had forfeited the remainder of his salary because he is out with a groin injury.

Hasek, who announced Feb. 10 that he would miss the rest of the season, has not accepted pay since Jan. 9, Holland said Friday. That was the day Hasek and the team agreed the goaltender should rest the injured groin for two to four weeks.

Hasek tested out the groin in early February, but later said he no longer could play this season. The nagging injury limited him to just 14 games after he came out of a one-year retirement. Hasek was 8-3-2 for the Central Division-leading Red Wings this season.

By Jan. 9, Hasek had received a little more than $3 million of his $6 million salary for the season.

"I came to Detroit, and I felt that I could play at the highest level. And I wasn't able to do it," Hasek said.

The goaltender said he would decide in the next few weeks whether to undergo surgery.

"My goal is to come back and play hockey," he said. "I don't want to have surgery, but if two doctors say yes, then I will."

Hasek said he did not intend to make public his refusal to accept his salary and spoke only after Holland discussed the issue with reporters.

One of the NHL's greatest goalies, Hasek won two MVP awards and six Vezina Trophies, given to the league's top goalie, during a nine-year stint in Buffalo. He also led the Czech Republic to a gold medal in the 1998 Nagano Olympics.

Hasek joined the Red Wings before the 2001-02 season, winning his first Stanley Cup that season. He retired in 2002, but came back to Detroit before this season.

God what a great guy. You think of all these other coaches and gms blowing millions on players, because the players and nhlpa think they are worth it. But then comes along Hasek. NOw thats the attitude I would expect from these guys. I mean seriously, they won't take a salary cap, but the NFL guys voluntarily took one. THats too much for me. After this Bertuzzi thing, I think the level of hockey has gone waaaayyy down. They arn't worth that much money, and therefore the privilege of seeing a game isn't worth the 70$ it costs for good seats. Poo on the NHl.

P.S Yes I went off topic...BUT WHOS GONNA STOP ME?!:)

Sorry IDefy but umm.. Look at Rick Nash and the Columbus Blue Jackets, that is a Stanley Cup winning Cinderella Team.

If you lived in Erie as I do, you would hate Rick Nash, you see in juniors he was like Paul Kariya, a diving sack of shit. If he was touched, even poked it was called. He would dive nearly all the time against the Erie Otters (OHL team).

With Columbus nearly the worst team in the league with the exception of Pittsburgh they won't be making any cup runnings soon.

Oh I forgot to mention mr. selfish, Rick nash is the leading goal scorer in the NHL but look at his assists, he is not a team player, he doesn't belong in the NHL with his ****y attitude or his puck-hogging. In the long run i'm sure either St. Louis or Kovalchuk will beet him out for most goals at the end of the season.

IDefy I realize all of this and I was just kidding. I point out the same thing about how he has like 6 assists to his goals which suxs considering Kovlychuk has like as many assists as goals.

As for the Junios stuff, I cant say anything about that, I never follow any of the junior teams. And they arent actually gonna go to the cup. Cleveland has the Cavs for palyoff hopes

The reason I know him from junior league play is because the Erie Otters crushed the London Knights and went on to win the OHL championship.

@Axl: I think the bruins have a great shot after picking up Gonchar and Nylander but it's Raycroft i'm worried about, young and inexperianced.
