Someone told me today that happiness is totally dependent on an individual's relationships with other people. Do you think this is true?

For those of you who are happy why are you happy?

Those who aren't? why not?

Kind of. I don't believe anyone can be happy without someone else, either directly or indirectly with them. Some claim to have found happiness with God..... I don't know really, it sounds so..... Lonely.

After all, Humans are social beings.

I would say that happiness is totally dependent on the individual's relationship with his/her own self. If we dont have a balanced relationship with ourselves, "Hell is other people" ( like Sartre said).

btw, welcome back Jaden:D

it depends on the person, some people think theyre happy without any social contact and after some time they kill themselves ;)

Well, my mother says "Happiness is a choice"...

Although it doesn't really seem like that to me. I'm neither happy, or not-happy. I'm...floating. Why? Well, because I choo...

Well, maybe that happiness is a choice thing has a little merit.

You must love yourself before you can love anyone else.
You must be happy with yourself in order to be happy at all.

One thing I can not stand is women that DON'T play with themselves. ( give me a sec to tie this in with the topic) How the hell am I supposed to get you off if you can't even do it yourself. If you have no desire to get off then why am I wasting my time here?
In Life you have to know what you like. How you come to the conclusion about what you like is internal. It comes from deep down in. No one can tell you what you like or what makes you happy.

The only person you need to make you happy is YOU~!!!#@!

replace "totally" with "somewhat" and I'd agree. Course we're "social beings" as x42bn6 puts it, but then again...im sure you've heard of monks that live in complete isolation and only find happiness in religious enlightenment.

The path one takes to 'happiness' depends much upon one's lifestyle and one's beliefs. Whilst some may find happiness in friendship and love, others may find happiness in prayer...I even know a couple of people who rely soley on pills.

....and VegetaClam, sorry to break it to you pal, but life doesn't revolve around sex.

as said above, it depends on the person. some people can fill that relationship gap with god, or themselves. i cant. without people i care about i feel like ive got nothin to live for cept to have fun. i still have people to care bout so im still happy most of the time.

i would agree with that for most people

what hasnt been said yet is that with training you can make yourself happy, be it you are or are not, you have social contact or not. it is all about the fact that belief always goes over knowledge and will. if you want to be happy, you can be happy, you just have to believe in the fact that you can be happy without a reason other than you believing in the fact itself and your own will.
so for me, im only not happy, if i do not want to be happy.

It is true that nothing happens to us if we dont let it happen. Usually we are not the *victims* of misfortune. Usually we had it coming. In that sense, yes, we are not happy only when we choose not to be happy. But it is not a matter of training, Mr. Jesus:D It's a matter of choice.

Dennis Learry said something that I whole-heartedly agree with: Happiness comes in small doses...a cup of ice cream for example. I've always believed in that and other theories similiar, and I have been a much happier person since. Mainly because I'm not letting the downtimes bring me um...down.

thats pretty much what i said. its a psychological effect... get a grip please, happiness doesnt come in doses, thats utter bullshit. but by appreciating little things positively youre of course getting happy, but you could do exactly the same with sad things. this little-thing-theory is just a help to the effect i described in my above posts.

How is it bullshit? I don't think anyone here can honestly tell me that they have had a full day with nothing but happiness, not to mentions weeks, months, and years. The moral is, don't expect to be happy all of the time, because it's not going to happen. Take life as it gives it to you.

i guess youre right, but i was trying to say is something else, i understood you this way: by getting happy through a small thing your happiness meter increases. now what im saying is that you can put your happiness meter whereever you want it to be. if you fail to do so all by yourself something else can help you. now as very great things dont happen all to often it would be stupid to solely rely on them as a base of happiness. instead you have this guy telling you to enjoy the small things in life. hes telling you because theyre happening more often. appreciating them means that you take them as a help to set your happiness-meter, that is.

Confusing, but I think I got your point, and it was a good one.

i think happiness is a choice. i think it revolves for most around your relationship with God and yourself and this affects your relationship with other people. I'm only happy when i'm close to God.
