ok so the internal cd drive in my laptop is defective, so i purchased a new external one (which works great) but when i decided i wanted to format my puter i ran into some problems...

BIOS wont recognize the drive so i cant set it to boot from the drive =(

device manager/system info both recognize the drive but for some reason i cant get BIOS to recognize it...i know that my BIOS is capable of booting from usb cause both my flash, and external HDD are recognized

Board: CLEVO D900K VT8341B
BIOS: Phoenix 4.06CJ15 04/27/2007

any ideas as to the problemo?

*update* well i dont know how to load an iso/image onto the external hard drive to reformat so i dont know if my BIOS will boot from it, but i did test the flash drive and it did boot from and gave me the invalid disk or whatever it said

AND i tried to boot from the cd drive on a different laptop to no avail...what the fuck is wrong

so this is pre windows install right?

my guess is: because there is no OS installed ATM there is no plug and play type of drivers installed to the computer. The computer won't recognize the drive because it doesn't have the drivers that come with windows. See if you can't install windows on an external hard drive through another computer and then connect it to ur laptop. If the bios are new enough, there should be an option to boot from USB...not 100% there...Assuming your laptop will recognize the OS on the external hard drive, you should be able to use the external dvd drive, from here, install windows on your normal drive. Change what drive the OS boots off of and you should be set.

if you cant get windows to install to the extternal drive, you should be able to install linux to the drive and you can then install windows to your laptop's harddrive since now you have the drivers to recognize the external cd/dvd drive

sorry if i didn't specify...actually windows (vista) is installed on the computer, im simply trying to reformat

so it does have the drivers, and SHOULD be able to do what i need but like i said im running into some snags - BIOS does recognize the drive in the initial startup screen, but when i enter setup and try to boot from it there is nothing indiciating it recognizes the drive...does that mean that its simply not able to boot, or should i go through the trouble to try and update bios or some other shit
