Sony has lost over $3 billion on the PS3 - Video Game Feature - Yahoo! Video Games

article said:
Think you paid too much for your Playstation 3? Don't expect any sympathy from Sony.

In the company's fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony revealed that they've now lost roughly $3.3 billion (that's billion with a B) on the Playstation 3 since its launch. That breaks down to $2.16 billion in 2007, followed by a notably smaller but equally daunting $1.16 billion loss in 2008.

The reason? Pricing the console below its production cost. That's right - that hefty $599 you paid for the PS3 back when it first launched was significantly cheaper than the cost of producing it in the first place, and while the retail price has come down some, the losses keep piling up.

Investors have reason to sweat. In a statement, Sony claimed "the large-scale investment required during the development and introductory period of a new gaming platform may not be fully recovered." They went on to note that they've invested a great deal of money into R&D for the console, a sum they might not be able to recoup if the PS3 "fails to achieve such favorable market penetration."

Sony fanboys should take heart, however. Losing money on hardware is relatively common in the video game biz, as companies routinely lower prices to sell more units and thus stimulate software sales. Sony's game division saw a 26% sales spike last quarter, a trend they expect will continue on the strength of strong exclusives like the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming sequel Resistance 2.

But will it be enough?
ultimate fail.

They say that it is common, but Nintendo has routinely priced their console to make a quick buck. Only time they lower the price is when they want to sell it quickly.

The PS3 was massive fail. It is so utterly useless, un-needed accessories.

The Wii is a console that I would not want to get. The online network is pathetic, even Wii owners can agree. That leaves it to be a console that I would play with myself or friends. However, I like deep story-driven games and I can find more on the other consoles. Local gaming is... Smash Bros., but there's a version on the GAMECUBE!

The PS3 and Xbox... honestly, I believe the PS3 is the superior console in terms of ability. It has blu-ray and a larger harddrive. However, my favorite games are multiplatform and the Xbox version is the one that the games are usually made on first, or have a better version. For instance:

GTA4 was made on the 360 first. Also, Virtua Fighter 5 is online enabled on the 360, versus not on the PS3.

But the real reason I'm drawn to the 360 is the online structure. The PS3 is free but has less players and has less functions than the 360. The 360 makes microphones standard, so you can talk easily. You have a buddy list, matchmaking and camera. It's a great thing.

I do have to whine about the Red Rings, the $100 wireless adapter and the pricey controllers.

My favorite games of this gen are:
- Bioshock
- Mass Effect
- Call of Duty 4

and soon to be:
- Street Fighter 4
- Soul Calibur 4
- Silent Hill 5

Not if you have a nice TV and nice sound system. The difference between Blu-Ray and Standard DVD is huge if you have the proper tools to view it at max capacity.

yeah we have a sweet HD set up, and I could care less about blu-ray. No ****ing way is it worth it, especially since DVDs are cheaper and will be around for a long long time.

Or if you're not poor. That helps too.

Well rich people have never been smart with money, thus creates the American lifestyle.

The PS3 was unnecessary, and there is no way you can defend it.
