Gif question

How do I keep the size of a .gif file down. For example: take my current sig. I wanna make text spell out on it (animated). The only way I could think of would be to make a different file for each of the spellings, and then put them together into one .gif file. Is there another way that I'm not aware of (I have photoshop/image ready).

You're only options without going to something like Flash (which I don't think this forum allows) is to turn down colors, use smaller dimensions, and the horrid "lossy" setting for saving GIFs...
