Ok, so my friend wanted me to build him a gaming computer that could play anything currently out on highest settings, from scratch, for less than $1400. This included all perephirals. Built this yesterday afternoon, after buying the parts Tuesday, and it runs like a dream, plays Doom III, Halo, and Half-Life 2 all maxed. I figured I'd post this here as sort of a guide to those looking to buy a decent to high end gaming machine. Now of course, for $1400 you can't get the absolute best of everything, but here is the list of what I got:
Mobo ~ K8 Triton nForce 4 socket 939 motherboard. $140
CPU ~ AMD 64 3200+ Socket 939 $240
Ram ~ (the actual namebrand escapes me at the moment) 2x512 Dual Channel "insert namebrand here" DDR400 Ram $104
HDD ~ Maxtor Serial ATA 300 gig 7200 RPM Hard Drive (Second only to the fabled 10,000 RPM "Raptor") $200 (we caught an awesome ****ing sale)
Case ~ Fudin Scorpio w/ 420 Watt PSU, 7 stock case fans w/ LEDs, front temp LCD display $FREE$
GPU ~ nVidia GeForce 6600GT 128mb PCI-E $250
Audio ~ Logitech Gamer 5.1 Xtreme Audio speaker system $80
Monitor ~ Sony 17'' Flat Screen LCD @ 16ms $130
CD Drive (the only thing I was dissapointed in) ~ CD-R/RW/DVD combo drive 52x40x52 $40
Etc. ~ Internet keyboard, Optical Mouse, Floppy Drive (black), Logitech Headset. $50 (combined)
Like I said, the only thing I was dissapointed in was the optical drive. It was on sale, and we were pushing the budget at that point, so we grabbed it. We wanted it built that day (which still didn't happen) so we didn't want to wait to order a cheaper, better drive from newegg (everything was bough in one trip at Fry's Electronics). The prices above are approximated, I don't have the reciept on me and it was a long day.
So there's a computer set to play any game out at the moment @ highest settings, without breaking the bank. Parts can be changed (we only took that HDD because it was an insane deal, we coulda saved $100 and got a 120 gig), and with the case we got we could just as well have gone with the AMD 64 3000, and overclocked, which we did with this one anyway.
Thoughts, comments, constructive criticism is always welcome
I'm planning on building a $700 complete mid-high gaming machine, so I'll update on how that project turns out.
