Gameplay
The controls for contra are simple. A to jump, b to shoot. Up is used to aim in upwards diagonals, while down to duck, or aim in downwards diagonals.
The gameplay itself is fast, and somewhat difficult. Enemies appear almost nonstop, fire at you - and any hit is an instant death. You start with three lives, and once you lose all three the level is started over again from the start. However, each death starts you off roughly in the same place.
The second level, switches from horizontal to vertical, and the ojective is to blast through room after room of enemies that run across and fire. Automatic weapon systems (That strangely look like faces at least to me) appear, every room. To advance, destroy the crystal.
Different weapons are obtained through killing power up blimbs, or by destroying power up boxes and collecting the red badge that appears.
Weapons provided include the "machine gun", standard gun, laser, and the spread gun. The spread gun is easily the most diverse, and useful in the game. close up it deals great damage, to one target and far away it hits a large area, dealing suitable damage as well. The laser goes through enemies on killing them, making it useful against lines of enemies.
Rating: 9/10
Graphics
The graphics are presentable, and well done. with a variety of enemies, neat backgrounds and bosses. But there's not a whole lot left to say.
Rating: 8/10
Storyline
The game was released back in the day when storyline was all but nonexistant, and it shows. I think it has to do something with a meteor, so you're off to kill things.... Yeah. Makes no sense to me either. Apparently every country contra was released in had a different version of the story, so I don't really think the storyline really matters.
