There is already technology to make cool futuristic cars, but not the kind that drive up walls and shoot out grappling hooks. The cool stuff is what they can utilize as fuel. Take futuristic fuels for example, the kinds that we can't yet utilize. There are also doomsday predictions about how we're going to run out of fuel.
The funny thing about all of those doomsday predictions about us completely running out of fuel is that there are actually viable fuel alternatives being used, and technologies in the works fro more stuff.
Take methanol for example cheap, renewable, and water soluble so it's easy to put out. The problem is it burns light blue so you can't see it during the day, a problem that is being worked on currently by many people including some researchers I actually know.
So is this less powerful than gasoline i.e. will my car go fats if it runs on methanol? Indy car says yes, in fact you could end up with better performance from a methanol car.

And for those of you still wanting gasoline for some crazy reason there is something called Thermal Depolymerization Process or TDP. Basically garbage into oil, sewage into oil, agricultural waste into fuel. This process can also refine out other chemicals and mineral as well and take apart some bigger compounds that are a bitch to deal with by other methods.
