Let me go into detail of how cool i think a doom mmoFPS would be...
First, the graphics would be a little less demanding as doom 3(if its demanding at all!) but still the lighting system would be made good use of and such. Anyways, it would be an open world, with several planets(mars...earth...lunar settings...hell) There would be a few safe zones from monsters, where you can upgrade your character, like, reflex and such or buy ammunition or health packs or even armor. Outside of the free zones...are huge expanses of science labs, computer stations, volcanoes, craters, etc. where you can actually walk from place to place...OR ride a vehicle where found(scattered around the areas, if you find it, you can drive it! and if people hop in, they can man the guns....because you can get blowed up or shot down if your in a chopper) There would be puzzles for you and other players to figure out, areas where hundreds of monsters roam, that have intellegent AI that will run away and get help, attack you on sight, and some that will set traps for you(like lay mines or gather a few other monsters to jump you) There would be a variety of monsters as well. Imps would have the ability to climb on walls and roofs, so think of the scene from LOTR where the goblins/orcs crawl from the roof....so in one situation, you could be in a cafeteria, killing a few mutant zombies when 20 imps crawl in from one of the airducts...only to spread out and attack you from multiple angles. Some could even chase you down for a melee attack...you could go from mars to the moon and then to earth to try and save it from a massive invasion from hell...and eventually go to hell and fight the monsters there.
Weapons would be numerous instead of just 7...they would have like 6 or so of the 7, but there would be other weapons like grenade launchers and mines or even auto cannons. Auto cannons are set to attack hostiles...but some of the monsters in the game would be computer hacker styled and might start with the ability to place their own auto cannons OR hijack one of yours...lets say you place an auto cannon to protect a hallway. You dont return for about a half hour and its a lesser traveled area. But you do have to run back through it because your out of life or something and you run back towards whre you placed your auto cannon...only to be torn to peices and sent back to a start location with NO weapons.
I think it would be ok to drop money as a needed resource. Instead, you get ranked in the game and depending on your rank, when you die and revive, and you go to the item shop to buy weapons and armor(and keys), they give you extra weapons...ex: if your a private, you get a pistol. But if your a leiutenant(sp?) you can get a machine gun...and guns wouldnt be droppable either :-/ but you could pick them up if you saw them on the ground in monster zones...
death would mean you lose a rank level and guns. Also you would be sent back to a respawn point, so you would have to work your way back!
